Oh, melodramas are fun! They are just dramas that are over the top. Usually, there is a villian with a cape and he twirls his moustache a lot. He wants to marry some guy's daughter -- but she doesn't want to marry him. And then there's the Handsome Hero, who saves the day. Everyone is as dumb as bricks, so you can get away with a lot in a melodrama.

Usually there are plot twists, too. For example, the villian discovers he is the hero's long-lost twin brother. Or the heroine and another character were switched at birth by a scheming wet nurse.

A great modern melodrama is SOAP (from the 1970s). I don't know how old you are, but it's targeted for adults. There's people getting kidnapped by aliens, demon babies, adultery, prison break-outs and various alarums and diversions. You might want to tame it down if you are in jr. high (-:.

1b: the genre of dramatic literature constituted by such works
2: melodramatic events or behavior

Write about a movie or play you seen and liked a lot.
