I have a 40 gallon breeder tank with several fish ( I know I am OVERCROWDING). Several koi from 4-6 inches, 3 albino rainbow sharks, 2 colombian sharks, a betta, and a pleco. Tonight I adopted a rather large (and beautiful) gold algae eater (6"). Since they tend to be aggressive, is he likely to attack his new tank mates, or are they big enough to fend for themselves?? I have a plant cluster in one corner and a rock formation for shelter. Will the rest of the fish be okay, or do I have a bully on my hands?

I have never had a major problem with an algae eater being too aggressive. I have seen mine try to suck on the side of my fish, but that was about it. Yes, it does sound like you are overcrowding, but just keep an eye out on the algae eater. If he apposes a threat, remove him and place to another tank, or see if your local pet store would adopt him.
My koi's range from 4" to 13"! 6 of them and all of them fend for themselves.

um... since your tank is 'overcrowded' maybe the new guy will turn BULLY! he's big and aggresive right? and your plants will be eaten soon, cause big algae eaters (not the pleco type) likes to eat plants.
and even tho they're herbivores, since they're "suckers" they can attach themselves to you other fishies and suck the body mucus - which is a bad thing! i know 'cause i've had two of those with my goldfish and kois!
anyway why'd you bought the new guy? you already had a pleco right?

should be fine
algae eaters are herbivores or scavengers at the most, should not attack live, active fish. If you get a lethargic, almost dead fish the algae eater will be happy to dispose of it for you
