The Black Death of 1348-49 because it started a century of death and destruction, economic upheaval and rebellion. It also set a track for major wars between the major powers of the time (M)

Second world war. Europe was ravaged and needed help. The americans arrived and influenced our identity. Now we have fast foods, coca-cola, etc... That war was aslo the utlime in our continent. After that, we decided to begin the unification of the continent, to stop war and help us economically. Russians wanted also the communism to invade the continent. They annexed the eastern coutries and a half of Germany. Russians versus americans, who were fighting against communism, leads to the cold war, which changed european psychology.

It depends on what country's perspective you're looking at. I would say the Protestant Reformation because it started it all, or the Renaissance. The Renaissance brought in a new way of thinking and establishment of nation-states.
