I had to have stiches in my hand. They told me to keep it dry and gave me Hydrocodeine for pain and cephalexin cap 500MG to prevent infection. It is much more swollen today and hurts like crazy. Yesterday, it looked like they butchered a pig in the ER! There was blood all over! I was trying to get two salmon patties apart with a knife and accidentally stabbed my hand with the knife. Is it normal to be more swollen and hurt more today than yesterday? I had to have 7 stitches and they had to repair the artery that was sliced.? My whole hand is so swollen it is hard to bend my fingers. What are the warning signs that should send me back to the ER?

Normally, injured tissues continue to swell for 24 - 48hours after the injury - that's why black eyes look worse the next day.
Is the hand also discolored/bruised? They should have given you a list of discharge instructions, and wound care.
1] If the hand looks bruised, elevate it above your heart to decrease the swelling [ will make it feel better and improve healing ].Prop it up on pillows or a couple of couch cushions.
Put an ice pack wrapped in plastic and a thin cloth under your hand while you elevate it.It should feel a lot better in the AM.
2] If it turns red, feels warm to touch, or gets more swollen , call the doc. If it starts draining, call the doc. If incision puffs up, call the doc. If you run a temp, call the doc.
3] Change the dressing as instructed. Keep it clean and dry.
You could tape a rubber glove over it to shower, when your hand feels better. In the meantime, take a bath with your arm on the tub rim, out of the water.
4] Take ALL your antibiotics [ cephalexin ].

Yes it is natural for your hand to hurt worse today than yesterday. When you hurt your hand your body would have automatically sent you some chemicals to help you deal with the pain and shock. Now your hand is starting to heal and it is going to hurt for a few days! Days 3 and 4 will likely be the worst and then you should see some improvement.

Yes it is normal to fill worse today Your hand had a great trauma yesterday. they had to give numbing agents directly in the cut that took hours to wear off so you felt pretty good. now, that drug is out of your system, to be replaced by a pill that is only going to relieve some of the pain. Give it a couple of days . The swelling and pain will start going away

seems such as you had a considerable surgical treatment on your hand. i'm shocked they could do arterial surgical treatment interior the ER and not an working room under sterile circumstances. That being pronounced, you have gotten an infection as, once you shrink your self, fabric you have been reducing on the time have been given into the wound. in the event that they did no longer sparkling it out nicely adequate, voila, an infection. in case you haven't any longer been to be certain your person well being care expert, i could do it as we communicate; you could desire a drain put in and a distinctive antibiotic.

You have experienced severe trauma to the hand and artery, it is common to have alot of swelling to the area.
It will get worst before it starts to get better, don't panic, keep it clean and dry.
If the redness increases and the area starts to get hot, contact your doctor.
