You can travel up and down the river a couple of times and get the equivalent distance to the whole length of the U.S. However, there is a big difference in traveling up and down the river to seeing the whole country.

The north-south run of the Mississippi runs from the middle of Minnesota to the Gulf of Mexico.

not in my opinion. The Mississippi R. starts in Lake Itasca in Minnesota and flows to the Gulf of Mexico around New Orleans. So it flow out of the US into the Gulf, but it starts in the US, not in Canada. So, it is close, but does not quite travel the length of the US (of course length would be E-W to me anyway)
