Top Gear was very complimentary to the Mitsubishi EVO. They took high speed laps on a long curvaceous race track with a Lamborghini. The Lamborghini could not pull away from the EVO after 4-5 laps. Know one can argue the pedigree of the Continentals with their storied histories. They execute the brand in their own unique and in some cases flamboyant way. Who can question the tenor of a Ferrari engine that sings with a symphony of polished cylinders in rapid succession, as it revs to red-line in 4th gear? The Continentals have been made with nationalistic pride, sturdy hands and from the sweat of the brow from some of the best automotive minds.

What the Japanese have managed to do, is make a power-train with greater precision than the Old World approach of building a car. They have skipped the institutional knowledge, programmed it into the software and built a massed produced car that can run 0-60 times in similar times as an Exotic. The way they reach 0-60 is totally different, and that is why you either spend a fortune to have the prestige brand or a years pay and have a striking chance to pursue a Continental. The material difference between the two is apples to oranges. The Continental will hold it's value and have a shelf life well into the next century. What I am referring to is the science, mechanics and the technological advances that make Japanese cars sound competitors in speed and handling, this is were they compete, strongest. Honda builds one of the finest engines in racing and the majority of the Indy cars drive Honda. Honda can compete and on a given day beat any European mark on the race track, this includes Mercedes, BMW, Ferrari. Check it out.

Well, I am somewhat unsure why you are asking this, as the tone of your question seems to indicate you've already decided on an answer... but:

First off, you are comparing cars that run around $30k to cars that run in the $100k+ catagory... and for that you wonder if their performance is equal? It's not a fair comparison exactly. Both the STI and the Evo are capable track cars, and will perform well albeit with a few weak points. Ultimately they are not going to keep pace with the likes of an F430 or a CGT, but they are not going to be as much behind as you seem to think (most would enjoy a solid few seconds a lap advantage over the STI and Evo).

Of course, a change of weather could quickly reverse this... stock vs. stock afterall would mean the dry weather Pilot Cups on the CGT are not a complete disadvantage, while the Evo and STI's all wheel drive and cheaper rubber now would give it an edge!

Now you ask why someone would want to midify their car? Be it Japenese, German, American, the answers tend to be the same. And the very fact that you ask the question about how they would perform around a racing circuit means you have at least given one good reason already! Yes, even the cars you mention are not ideally suited to race tracks. At the very least they will need a more appropriate allignment and corner balancing, along with more aggressive brake pads and tires.

And while I actually drive a German car, the truth is I have tracked a WRX before - not an STI, just a bone stock WRX wagon that had to stand in due to a fuel pump failure. Despite being on street rubber I did not have to follow anyone's tail, and in fact had no problem blowing past a number of Ferrari's on a regular basis at Laguna Seca. Ultimately an upgraded driver could easily propel that STI or Evo much faster than anything you mention... My conclusion is that you are a being more than a bit arrogant, and if and when you actually spend some time on a race track you may look at cars differently. The STI and Evo have their shortcomings, but for their price point, they are hard to argue with (especially when you consider the possibility of one day taking the car into a wall or tire barrier... probably a key factor with someone I know that decided to sell their GT2 in order to get an Evo).

The STis/evos dont much stand a chance against things like SLRs, Zondas, Carrera GTs etc etc. They do plenty well against RS4s and corvettes though, not to mention many other cars that are far far outside of the price range.

That being said, they shouldnt. Theyre about 32 grand. The Carrera GT is over FOUR HUNDRED THOUSAND DOLLARS. they have 4 doors, a nice sized trunk, and enough ground clearance to go over speedbumps. None of the cars mentioned do, of the RS4 (which is still twice as expensive).

and STis/evos absolutely dominate in autocross events. Stock or not.

the STis/evos are also mega easy to drive. I race mine with the porsche club of america and pass all kinds of silly cars out there. All kinds of 911s and 911 turbos. Even GT3s and my dads GT2. They are far more than capable enough cars. Mines even stock.

Why NOT modify them? What about the modded BMW M3s and 911 GT3s (on race tires nonetheless) that cant keep up with me in my stock "japanese junky."

so basically youre an idiot on all fronts. You compared the sti/evo to a bunch of cars that cost well over 10X them. Not only that but you compared a fast family car to a bunch of exotic supercars. THEN you said theyre slow, which they just blatantly arent (check who wins the SCCA auto-X events, its all STIs and EVOs). Theyre incredibly fast cars for the money.

you have to be one of the stupidest people ive ever heard ask a question on here. And thats DAMNED impressive based on the average intelligence here.

and the japanese have had supercars in the past. The NSX was one of the best handling cars on the planet, the skylines were very capable, and the RX7 was impressive for its day.

You are delusional, and suffering from a bad case of car envy.

You're trying to compare apples to oranges. By your way or reasoning I guess we should run that Zonda against Hondas F1 car.

There is nothing "junkie" about an STI, EVO, or even a 350Z,S2000 or NSX, any of those cars will run hard against your typical Posche Boxster or Vette..and in some cases beat them. In fact that great poof Clarkson had the Evo and S2000 in his best top 50 ever picks.

But I think I know what your problem is....you can't afford ANY of them. Most likely you'll never own anything that can get out of it's own way....most probably an Espace hauling a caravan, and you'll spend your nights turning green with envy thinking about not only hyper euro Porsches and Ferrari, but super fast Japanese "Junkies" as well.

Now go get your F**kin Shine box.

well why do u think all of the wealthy people buy BMW's and Benz, Porsche's and others. The Japanese are modded because they are cheaper and have a fast feeling without the 100k+ plus u have to spend for Vanquish or Ferrari f430 or a Murcielago, but i like both of them. But i like the Mclaren F1 most of all the Mclaren F1, it was manufactured in the same year i was born and because its fast as HELL. but that is my opinion. A modded skyline or supra can be dangerous look up, 1200hp supra on youtube.

Apples and oranges!

Put an Acura NSX up against your European marques! How about at least being inside the same 100K in price before you try to slam the Japanese rides.

The Japanese cars you cite compete against the R-34 Golf or an Audi TT or a BMW 318i.

I don't get you pal??????

So..... any car that sucks needs to be modified? What if the above cars you listed ("Continentals") are modified? If I had a Ferrari or other super car, I probably wouldn't leave it stock.
Plus, you are comparing the proverbial apples to oranges here. A $30,000 4 banger sedan isn't meant to compete with a $250,000+ super car. But it is kinda cool if they mod it and come close, eh?
And Top Gear is harsh on anything that isn't British. Sometimes I think that they forget that England doesn't make cars anymore. (Jag/Aston=Ford, Lotus=Toyota engine, Atom=Honda engine, etc)

What a strange question...........a "junkie ride" would totaly own a "continental ride" if they were used off road (rally style) of round tight lanes and the likes,
where as a super car costing alot more would be better on a track..........this is mainly due to the gearing and suspention.

So basicly they are as good as each other depending on where you drive.
