And how does students in college get them in the first place?

They buy them. This is America, you do have the right to walk into a gun shop and buy whatever gun you want as long as you are not a felon or mentally defective. I am a college student and I own several guns. I have a conceal carry permit as well, but my university wont let me carry on campus. If you think a "no guns" sign is going to stop someone with the intent to kill you are delusional. Why should I expect someone else to protect me? Why should you? Shooting is a legitimate hobby for millions of people our age and its fun! Try it some time.

I do think it is rare, but I guess this varies by part of the country. Most colleges don't want firearms around, but there are states which believe strongly in the Second Amendment and don't restrict gun ownership or use. In some of these, the colleges allow students to keep guns around. I would guess that many, if not most, of these students got their guns legally, purchased by their parents if they are underage.
