Question about vectors..?

Question

For vectors, if it says that vec. w = <3,4> and the problem says vector w + <1,2> and it asks to graph it.. would you graph <3,4> first, then extend it with <1,2> or add <3,4> + <1,2> and make one long vector?

w = 3 + 4i
v = 1 + 2i , say
w + v = 4 + 6i
where w + v is obtained from 4 horizontal followed by 6 vertical.
