Alexandre Dumas was born in 1802 and died in 1870.

The story is set in France during the reign of Louis XIV. The 1944 movie was set in a Hollywood stylized version of the same period. The 1970's version starring Micheal York, Oliver Reed, Albert Finney and Richard Chamberlin is much truer to the book and the setting. Completely disreguard the 1990's version with Sutherland, Platt, and Sheen.
