At the peak of the Roman Empire (it existed in many incarnations but I'm referring to the one that's usually called it) they controlled France, Spain, Italy, Greece, Slovenia, Croatia, Great Britain, Bosnia, Germany and Herzegovina, the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Albania, Romania, Bulgaria, and Turkey, Judea (which includes parts of Israel and the West Bank), Egypt, Marocco, Tunisia, and Algeria!

They were of course known under different names during that period in time.

Hope that helps!
