Red sky at night is a sailor's delight
Red sky in the morn, sailors take warn

A ring around the moon predicts snow in the forecast, with the number of stars inside the ring telling the number of 12 hour periods until it snow.

Leaves showing their undersides predicts rain in the almost immediate future (something like 20 minutes or less)

Sundogs also refer to coming storms usually snow as it is the ice crystals in the upper atmosphere that bend the light to form the dogs. I know my grandfather used to have a saying for sundogs, but they happen so rarely, that I may not have heard it enough times to recall it.

Red sky at night,
Sailor's delight.
Red sky in the morning,
Sailors take warning.

A ring around the moon is created from ice crystals way out in the atmosphere, sun dogs mean good fortune, and I would suppose when leaves show their undersides, it may be the announcement of autumn. Have a wonderful evening! Annie

Weather Folklore...

"Red sky at morning, sailors take warning
Red sky at night, sailor's delight."

The origin of the saying is unknown, although a form of it appears in the bible (Matthew 16:2-3). It has some basis in science and is a fairly good predictor of-though no guarantee-of weather at the mid latitudes in the Northern Hemisphere, where storm systems generally follow the jet stream from west to east. A red sky in the morning indicates a sun rising in clear eastern skies casting its rays on storm clouds approaching from the west. At night the clear sight of the red setting sun would tell a sailor that no storms are to the west

-----------------------------------

"Ring around the sun, time for fun,
Ring around the moon, storm coming soon."

Folklore has it that a ring around the moon signifies bad weather is coming, and in many cases this may be true. So how can rings around the moon be a predictor of weather to come? The ice crystals that cover the halo signify high altitude, thin cirrus clouds that normally precede a warm front by one or two days. Typically, a warm front will be associated with a low pressure system which is commonly referred to as a storm.
It is believed that the number of stars within a moon halo indicate the number days before bad weather will arrive. Give it a try the next time you observe a moon halo.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

"When a rainstom is coming, dandelions close their blossoms tightly, morning glories "tuck in" their blooms as if ready for a long nap, clover folds up its leaves, leaves on many trees roll up or show their undersides."

"When leaves show their undersides, be very sure that rain betides."

-----------------------------------------------

Sun dogs are indicators that weather conditions are likely to change in the next 18 to 36 hours

A sun dog is a relatively common halo, an atmospheric optical phenomenon mostly associated with the refraction of sunlight by small ice crystals making up cirrus or cirrostratus clouds.

I've heard all those...
Have you ever heard that if cows are sitting on the ground rain is coming?

For the record...I think reading signs in nature is as good as watching the weather station...they hardly ever get it right.
