Too busy reaping the rewards of the crimes of their ancestors, all while protesting right back that they are "innocent". They live off of the fat of the crimes, but they are insulted when any other association with slavery is brought up.
Hypocrites.

There is nothing that can be done that would be enough to make amends to those poor people forced into slavery. But to answer your question, No. Because there's nobody left to apologize to and nobody left to do the apologizing. Anything done now would be a token gesture in the hopes of getting some votes on election day. I don't think you'd find anyone alive today (except for some crazy, freako, extremists) who believes that slavery was a good thing. I personally do not happen to be descended from American slave owners and do not feel I owe anyone an apology for anything. Even if you could track down those descendants of slave owners, could you honestly blame THEM for what past generations did? When a man commits a crime, do you put his kid in jail? Slavery is an unforgivable crime that has been going on since the beginning of history and that still goes on today in other parts of the world. The best we can do is learn from the atrocities of others and work to abolish unjust practices like this across the globe. If you go back far enough, you will probably find slaves and slave owners in every culture. This does not make it right, but blame and forgiveness is for the generations involved.

I believe that this country has made appologies galore. But my question to you is, were you a slave? I'd say affirmative action has done a great deal for for the African American race. What about all of the scholarships available to only black Americans, job training, etc. I have personally never owned anyone or had the desire to and I don't feel that I owe you an apology. Years ago blacks were treated very unfairly and I was appalled at some of the racial situations, separate bathrooms, hotels, restaurants, education levels, etc. but I just don't see that happening anymore. Do you think that all of us should feel guilty for what some of our ancestors did? Were the Jews and American Indians treated improperly, too? Are you the only race that has been treated unfairly? Why don't poor whites today have special rights? I mean how long is this issue going to be pounded into the ground? Did you know that a great many slaves were sold into slavery by the other warring tribes in Africa? Do you think that the captors would have treated them any differently, would they not have endured slavery or death by their captors? I think the tables are balanced fairly now, and the past should be put to rest, just like my great great grandfather who died in the battle of Fredricksburg trying to enforce our country's resolve to free slaves, don't you think that we deserve an apology for losing our ancestors in their quest to make all men free?

Wasn't there some law or ammendment a few decades ago where money was sent to African American families to "repay" them for their ancestors who were slaves? I thought so... Even if there was, its still not a complete apology.

The America of today is not the America of the slavery times. Not discriminating towards blacks would be better than an apology.

Well I don't like the thought of slavery, but one thing that people don't tend to realize is that back then, mostly wealthy land owners had slaves. My family were immigrants back then and they lived very poorly. It does bother me just a tad when people get mad at me for slavery that my family had no part in because someone wants to assume that all of us were like that in the past. Its not true. There were a lot of people who did not like slavery. That's why we had the Civil War, remember?

i think of reparations for any lifestyle/ race is a awful theory. yet in addition i think of slavery or oppression of any variety is evil. a central authority apology must be so as yet does not appease all people in touch. i'm quite sorry that certainly one of those hideous prepare tarnishes our American Histories, yet i don't think of any slaves or slave proprietors are nevertheless alive and how many generations can quite be held to blame for what passed off? we are actually a loose usa of loose human beings and in spite of the very incontrovertible fact that its taken somewhat too long we are in a position to proudly say we are all equals. i think of maximum folk, no rely how they ended up in this usa are chuffed to be right here too so why not apologies, placed the previous at the back of us and flow on?

Are you being serious??? Affirmative action isn't enough along with having everyone tip toe around the issue of the slavery.?

Awful things happened, nothing can ever fix what happened in the past.

All I can say is forgive and forget.

First of all you candy-***, living in the past, cant get over it-WHINER; the Africans sold their own people to the Americans because they were making a profit on it. Do you really think the people sold into slavery, weren't slaves already? Get past it, it was over a hundred years ago and the expiration date is long over due. Find a new excuse for this century-maybe you can blame being a serial killer on your parents cause you didn't get a pony for your 7th birthday!

I think they have the theroy of past is past so why bother open a wound that's already closed. To get an apology from them will be hard because they probably think there's no point of giving one now...Anyway the America then and Americanow are completely different.I think most of them are sorry for what their ancestors did though.

here we go again...probably because pretty much everyone alive today was too young to have anything to do with it. it stinks that it happened, and it is really an embarassing bit of shameful history, but come on....it is done and over with and you have to move on. surely you realize that even though there will always be ignorant prejudiced people, everyone in this country, black, white, or any other race, has the same fair chance to make something of themselves. and don't try to say that isn't true. please. there are poor people of every race but if you are smart and work hard you can get loans, grants, scholarships, whatever and find a way to finance a higher education. after that, in the job market, the playing field in even. it really is. what kind of amends do you want? a financial handout? free land? what? will that make you forget about what happened to your ancestors and erase all your angry feelings about it? it makes no sense. sure it was wrong. sure it never should have happened. but it did and it's done and time to move past it. otherwise it never ends. the bitterness, the hurt, the anger. it's a waste of time. and it won't change the past anyway.
