Do they lay an homage of flowers at his shrine?

2007-05-09 16:29:45 · 19 answers · asked by Frank 2 in Politics & Government Politics

He wrote "A People's History of the United States". Besically a communist revision of history.

If you’ve read Marx, there’s no reason to read Howard Zinn. In fact, reading the first line of The Communist Manifesto makes a study of A People’s History of the United States a colossal waste of time. The single-bullet theory of history offered by Marx—“The history of all hitherto existing societies is the history of class struggle”—is relied upon by Zinn to explain all of American history. Economics determines everything. Why study history when theory has all the answers?

I do not worship Zinn, however he has some very relevant ideas that are not at all what you describe. Here are some examples for those who are unfamiliar: Americans have been taught that their nation is civilized and humane. But, too often, U.S. actions have been uncivilized and inhumane.
Howard Zinn

Dissent is the highest form of patriotism.
Howard Zinn

If the gods had intended for people to vote, they would have given us candidates.
Howard Zinn

If those in charge of our society - politicians, corporate executives, and owners of press and television - can dominate our ideas, they will be secure in their power. They will not need soldiers patrolling the streets. We will control ourselves.
Howard Zinn

In the United States today, the Declaration of Independence hangs on schoolroom walls, but foreign policy follows Machiavelli.
Howard Zinn

Most wars, after all, present themselves as humanitarian endeavors to help people.
Howard Zinn

One certain effect of war is to diminish freedom of expression.
Howard Zinn

There is no flag large enough to cover the shame of killing innocent people.
Howard Zinn

War itself is the enemy of the human race.
Howard Zinn

We need to decide that we will not go to war, whatever reason is conjured up by the politicians or the media, because war in our time is always indiscriminate, a war against innocents, a war against children.
Howard Zinn

i'm curious to comprehend what grade you're in. if you are concerned approximately this by ability of ability of your guy or lady volition then that's super, yet as quickly as you have extremely certainly one of your father and mom whispering on your ear, then they don't look to be doing you any extra suited than your instructor is. a pair of determination subjects that i'm in touch in is the context wherein your instructor is employing this fabric? Is he sticking to the curriculum and is that this fabric getting used to help a lesson or is he extremely happening a screed? As a history instructor myself i'm not too arranged on English instructors crowding my turf. Im not attempting to coach my youthful ones approximately previous participles, adjectives and nouns, you shouldnt be training the Vietnam conflict on your English type. a sprint history is suited, yet Zinn would be a sprint too heavy for what your instructor is proceeding. Its like bringing a Gatling Gun to a Knife attempt against, powerful its going to get the interest performed, yet there's a lots extra advantageous subtle way of going approximately it. Howard Zinn is an extremely respected historian, his classes are thoroughly vetted by ability of ability of the academic community. Its not as though he's pulling those products out of the air and fabricating fabric like Ward Churchill became into. Zinn is extremely purpose, thats why he's watching the two components of history. you would be able to desire to keep in mind youthful padawan that the victor or the hegemon continuously ultimately finally ends up writing the history. there has been very lots of whitewashing performed with history, Zinn in basic terms brings subjects decrease returned into physique of ideas. Alot of faculties use the e book to help their history curriculum, extremely on the college factor. till at last now you start up screaming academic freedom and touch David Horowitz the media and your college board, evaluate talking on your instructor one on one first and explaining distinctive your reservations, if that doesnt paintings, bypass on your extreme.

As a teacher I still own my teacher's edition of Howards Zinn's "People's History of the United States"

Howard Zinn fought in WW II and from that experience learned the truth of war

He's a political activist, a great professor and is widely considered one of the leading intellectuals in the world.

You might also, if you have a chance, want to read some Noam Chomsky ...widely regarded as the greatest intellectual in the world today....outstanding professor...peace/truth activist

then, if you have the time try some Norman Finkelstein, professor, truth activist, regarded as one of the greatest researchers alive today

Thanks for starting this topic right-wing hate monger..... Appreciate the chance to share

I make it a rule never to read anything a Conservatist recommends. I haven't read or heard of this guy prior to your question, and based on the aswers you've received, it's a good bet that you really only did read what you said you did, a couple of the first sentences. Can't make accusations based on a few sentences, if your going to accuse people of worshipping people, and they are people you want to insult, be sure the person you are talking about is actually what you think he is, otherwise you just prove to all the Liberals, myself included, the type of people who worship Bush, uninformed, and believe whatever they are told without actually searching to see if they are being lied to, or if they information being given is just propaganda. Stop giving us ammunition, look under the surface, you'll be surprised at what you find.

Who is Howard Zinn?

I must thank you, I had never heard of this man before I read your question, after a quick Wikipedia search of him, I found out about yet another intellectual who came from humble beginnings to challenge injustice, even when the culprit was his own nation.

I will be reading some of his written work in the near future. Again, thank you. I don't think I will be "worshiping" Mr. Zinn, but I always love to read the words of skeptics, free thinkers, and other brilliant individuals.

Heard great reviews of the book, but until your question, hadn't known the author. Thanks for pointing out another highly intellectual, honorable, peace loving, admirable American who had the gray matter to oppose the Iraq occupation. You should check his credentials and his reviews.
It seems that you ignore the failures of America and hate all that's good about America. How do you get so twisted?

I have read some of this book. What is it you don't like about truth.

You must be in the camp that thinks George Bush is a great President.. Which says quite a bit about you on a intellectual level.

You have the right to worship as you please. The government has no business either supporting or opposing religion in general or any specific religion.

...of speech

You have the right to express your views, whatever they may be. Only in the free marketplace of ideas can truth emerge.

Civil rights
All people are equal under the law. Any type of discrimination based on race, ethnicity, religion, disability, sexual orientation, or gender is not only inconsistent with a free and civil society, but is immoral as well.

Universal public education
Equality of opportunity requires all Americans to have access to a basic education consistent with maintaining informed citizenship and the ability to participate fully in society.

Tolerance of Differences
Because we are all unique beings, with different skills, needs, and wants, we must respect the life choices of others as long as their life choices do not infringe on the rights enjoyed by other citizens.

A Social Safety Net
Recognizing that circumstances beyond mortal control play a part in all our lives, a basic social safety net shall be avaliable to all who need it, not as a permanent lifestyle, but rather as a helping hand to get back on one's feet.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Employees' Rights
We spend most of our lives working. Work is the foundation of our economy and a major part of the glue holding together communities. The employee is an equal business partner with the employer, and as such, has the right to collectively bargain for terms of employment.

Environmental Protection
Contrary to some people's opinions, it is possible to both protect the environment and sustain economic growth. We support taking all reasonable and responsible steps to protect the environment and the species contained therein.

Strong Families
The family is the primary social unit in America. It must be respected, and encouraged in all its forms. Government should make policy with this in mind.

Responsibility
With rights come responsibilities. Exercising our rights means taking responsibility for our actions, and their effects on others.

Free Enterprise
The capitalist economic system is the most efficient solution to providing for peoples' wants and needs. Government's role is that of a regulator, not a controller of industry, and any regulation must only be for the good of society as a whole, and not for the benefit of any one entity.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Rule of Law
Law is the framework in which society operates. There can be no society without justice. Justice means that those who commit crimes must be made to answer for them, and that the criminal code is fair and wisely constructed. When criminal actions go unpunished, respect for the law weakens. The law applies to all, including all agents of the government.
