Do be honest and truthful in your dealings. People get caught in lies and then who will trust you. Your image is important so make it a good one. No one worth while will give you business unless they can trust you.

Do work hard and be disciplined but have balance. What is all the money in the world if you have no one to share it with.

Have passion about what you are doing. Who wants to work hard with something that they have no interest in. Passion makes you happy and gives you purpose.

Technically have a good business model that can replicate in your organization. You are the leader so whatever you do your people do and whatever you do not do your people will not do.

Know how to fairly manage the people you work with. Create a healthy working environment. When you have good people working with you they need to feel appreciated when they do good work. You want good employees to stay.

When working a deal know when to push and encourage and know when to keep your mouth closed. Say too much and the client will leave because you overload them. Say too little and they think your difficult to work with. Study people and their reactions to get the most accomplished.

Proper communication skills (re. writing) would help to build credibility. Remember that we the customers are the ones that will give you the businessman money - we make the judgements whether you like it or not.

Each market has a specific set of aspects that are important for success - the so called "Key Success Factors". (ex. In internet business this often means a good understanding of the programming tools and the business models of web 2.0..)

If you are a good programmer but do not know the way money is earned (the business model) then you will need to learn this piece of the puzzle.
And if you are a good programmer you probably will not be a good airline steward/ess... - you need context specific skills....
