I would suspect that a large number still base their most basic aspirations on the reactions of their parents and teachers. The more self protective they feel the need to be, or less human interaction with adults in their environment, the further out on the relationship rings they reach. Don't we all wish for the days of superstars like Einstein or Carl Sagen but the media isn't seeing those people at this time.

im 19 and i look up to people who have acheived success in what i want to do. im going to school to be a marketing woman and as soon as i have enough money, an entrepreneur. other successful entrepreneurs are my rolemodels.
im also a bikini model so girls with better bodies and better jobs are my role models. it motivates me to want to keep working hard working out and eating well because if i do, i could get there too with a lot of hard work and determination.

Sadly, our young people barely have any positive role models to look up to. I think one important reason for this is because they don't have anything to be passionate about. When someone gets excited about a certain issue, they look to its lead characters for guidance. That's what helped me become a stronger feminist.
