I would have to say The Carter Family. AP Carter was one of the founding fathers of country music. Now to pick who influences me the greatest in country music it is the following people:

Johnny Cash
Kris Kristofferson
Townes Van Zandt
Gram Parsons
Willie Nelson
Waylon Jennings
Billy Joe Shaver
Buck Owens
Merle Haggard
Hank Williams Sr.
Webb Pierce
Tom T Hall
Emmylou Harris
June Carter
John Hartford
and I could go on and on....

But NOWHERE in the picture is Kenny Chesney, Tim McGraw, Keith Urban......

There a four country artists who no one else even compares to.

Willie Nelson
Waylon Jennings
Johnny Cash
Kris Kristofferson

All have proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that they are extremely talented songwriters, singers, performers and musicians.

If I had to choose the greatest, I'd have to say Kris. He has written so many incredible songs, he never ceases to amaze me. The words he uses are beautiful and conjure up some fantastic imagery - for me, that is what country music is about.

Willie Nelson has a wonderful voice - even when he talks his voice is full of melody. My favorite Willie song is 'Me & Paul'.

There are some Waylon songs where his voice is haunting. 'Bridge Over Troubled Water' and many of his Kris Kristofferson covers send chills down my spine. He proved his worth as a song writer with my favourite - 'I do believe'.

I don't think anyone would disagree that Johnny is an incredible country star. I've always loved Johnny, from a personal perspective, his life story is insiprational to me. His second autobiography helped me to understand him - the depth in his songs is down to his experiences. "I'll try to carry off a little darkness on my back, 'Till things are brighter, I'm the Man In Black"

There is some good country out there today, but nothing like what we've lost. My opinion on the "best"s:
Male- Hank Jr., Ronnie Milsap, Johnny Cash, David Allen Coe, Willie Nelson, George Jones
Female- Patsy Cline, and maybe Reba & Dolly
Group- Alabama (but I love the Oak Ridge Boys too)
Duo- George Jones and Tammy Wynette. There will never be a better duo. Brookes & Dunn don't even come close.

I'll say Townes Van Zandt. He's arguably the greatest songwriter ever of any genre. It's a shame he isn't more well known. The only times his songs became hits were when they were covered by others such as "Pancho and Lefty" by Willie Nelson and Merle Haggard.

There are many out there.. hard to pick just one as many contributed.

Whereas my personal favorite is Earl Thomas Conley

My vote would go to the "Possom "George Jones

He sang the best country song ever ("He stopped loving her today"..considered to be the perfect country and western song , even though a David Allan Coe song claims it as a pun in another song)

He is one of the most influencial people in the way of artist who admired him growing up and wanting to be like him.

After 50 years, he's still touring.. and still appearing on records including the last 3 Brad paisley for sure.

Plus who could deny his resume of hits....

Hank Williams Sr. and Jr add up, vote could be said for others like Earnest Tubb, george strait, Johnny Cash and others.. but the best IMO is George Jones...
