The Essential Piaget; Gruber and Voneche, for one. A great man--studied his own children's learning and found universal stages, studying the young children at the Rousseau sp?--or in the rue Grange-aux-Belles in 1919. (my spell check isn't working) His job was to standardize tests, but instead, he interviewed the children at length finding the different levels of human understanding and at what age, these mature. I know that's where he formalized the following stages:

Sensori-Motor: those things that little children "know" and do without being able to verbalize the actions.
Pre-Concrete: this is when children start to draw their world around them--leads into diagramming and is now in the high-tech world of Information (IT--Information Technology).
Concrete: Verbalizing their world--
Formal Concrete: being able to compare one situation with another--one set of information with another one.

I used Piaget in working for 21 yrs with very troubled teenagers. Successfully, esp for adolescent guys, 14-19 yrs of age. They did not like to communicate verbally, but were able to diagram their behavioral patterns to a "T". (Pre-Concrete). Once the patterns of acting-out were diagrammed, they were then able to start verbalizing them--explaining what and why they were acting-out. (I used Wm. Glasser's Basic Human Emotional Needs: Belonging, Power, Freedom and Fun and they were able to analyze how they obtained those Needs through their acting-out. They were able to then use the Formal-Concrete method and compare those dynamics with the Family of Origin formation where, for some reason or other, those Needs were not obtainable due to illness of the parents; addiction, etc., etc. They realized that that's what they needed to do in order to get those daily Needs met when they were very young--COVERT behavior, but never-the-less, effective! These bhv'al patterns were then subsummed into a non-verbal conditioning. Then, they realized that now that they were much older and were out in a more normalized environment, they could get their Needs met OVERTLY--directly and effectively through language, learning and achieving. It was GREAT to see them grow in understanding and acceptance of themselves!! Most of the severe bhr'al acting-out guys graduated and went into adult life according to their own abilities.
