Well, we just set it up as such.

If the length is 10 feet longer than the width, then we must specify it in the formula:

l x w = A

l = 10 + w

w(10 + w) = 75

10w + w^2 = 75

w^2 + 10w = 75

w^2 + 10w - 75 = 0

Now we solve using the quadratic equation:

-10 +/- sqrt(100 - 4(-75))/(2)

-10 +/- sqrt(100 + 300))/2

-10 +/- sqrt(400)/2

(-10 +/- 20)/2

Now we solve:

-10 + 20 = 10/2 = 5

-10 - 20 = -30/2 = -15

So we can conclude that the two numbers are 5 and 15:

5 x 15 = 75

And there you go.

Hello Groovy Babe,

Let w = the width then
W+10 = the length

Now the area is L*W or W*(W+10) = 75

or W^2 + 10W = 75

subtract 75 from both sides and get w^2 + 10 W -75 = 0

Factor (W +5)(W-15) = 0 so

w =-15 extraneous root can't have a negative length and w = 5
works
so w = 5 and W+10 = 15 feet.

Hope This Helps
and W+10 = 25

The fenced area is 5 x 15. You know that the width is 'x' and the length is 'x + 10'. This may or may not be the best way to do it, but you could just guess and check to get the answer.

(w)(w+10)=75 w^2+10w=75 w^2 +10w -75 =0
(w+15)(w-5) = o since dimensions can't e negative w=5
so the width is 5 ft and the length is 15 ft

length = width + 10

area = length * width = 75

(width + 10) * width = 75 (from top)

width squared + 10 width = 75

gives you width = 5

and length = 15

5 by 15

guess and check numbers 10 apart that equal 75
