I think it is unfair that American idol allows back-up singers who have been PAID by major music labels as singers to participate on American Idol. Accomplished back-up singers of Melinda's stature are PROFESSIONALS in the MUSIC INDUSTRY, not amateurs, and AMERICAN IDOL IS FOR AMATEURS. Getting paid for a few gigs or for singing in a night club is one thing, but being paid to backup major recording artists and appear in their concerts and albums is another matter ENTIRELY. Also, she has access to the same producers and others in this industry that give her an unfair advantage, since they have helped her to hone her skills. I like Melinda, & I think she is just trying to "make it"; I see the fault as lying with American Idol itself. In spite of how "nice" she is, I cannot in good conscience support the advancement of Melinda, or as Randy has referred to her, "our resident pro". Who agrees with me?

Thank you! I thought it was absolutely ridiculous!!! Although, I didn't think she had the best voice anyway. She ALWAYS sounded exactly the same!!! And she had no personality. I also don't believe that she's so "nice"- she was so phony! Anyway, as you said AI is for amateurs, and she did not fit into that category. Go BLAKE!!!

I'm glad I'm not the only person that thinks that way. I do think that Melinda's lack of genuine passion is going to come back and bite her in her other cheeks next week and that she will be eliminated as a result.
There is a reason that somebody with a technically great voice like Melinda is a career back up singer and somebody with a mediocre-at best voice like Pink is a quasi -star; Pink has real passion
Melinda has been doing this too long and whatever passion she may have had at the beginning of the journey get lost along the road.
Katherine McPhee had the same problem last year ; she could sing circles around Taylor Hick's but TH was a likable, honestly passionate guy and won as a result.
Jordin wins this whole thing because she can sing , she is genuine and Americans love underdogs and despise ringers.

I totally agree with every thing you said. I have felt like this from the start this year. I like to see amateurs like Kelly Pickle or Fantasia get a chance to make good. The producers of this show should take these things in consideration. I was surprised when I found out that she was a backup singer and they let her be on the show because I thought that was not allowed in the past seasons. I like Melinda and I think she is a good singer, but give the amateurs a fair chance.

This year I was totally put off by the pool talent that graced American Idol, so I just decided to boycott the show and just watch "Dancing with the Stars" instead. The whole Sanjaya thing really put me off. As for Melinda, I really don't mind her being in their, but I would prefer that those with absolutely NO professional singing background would participate in AI because that what made this show great (remember Kelly Clarkson and the 1st season? She started out with a semi-crappy voice, but ended up polishing up her voice and winning the whole shebang!!!). Plus, since Melinda is a backup singer, I wonder why she didn't ask the people whon she sang backup for to show her how to score her own record deal. Mariah Carey and Michelle Williams of Destiny's Child both started out as background singers who ended up with their own solo careers.

This question seems to be leaning toward the young opinion. Well, kids, I'm a gramma and I LOVE AI. I have a musical family, two sons who are musicians and a future daughter-in-law who is a singer and a voice coach. All I can say is AI better get their rules straight. I believe the contestants should be nobodies - people who don't get paid to professionally sing. I hate to say this but it seams to me the show follows the game, "Simon Says"! He seams to be grooming Melinda all season just as he did Taylor Hicks last year. Simon has said Melinda is going to be our next AI. I don't care what anyone says about Katherine McPhee's stage presence last year, take a look and listen to her latest album. Where is Hicks? You youngsters must realize that you have to put your finger to the phone and vote, vote, vote!!

I do like Melindas voice but I never really thought about that. But I have to say that is a very good point that you brought up and the fact that she has had plenty of chances to record professionally and that she worked with professionals all the time and got paid. I do agree but at this point I don't think it matters because if it was against the rules they would have disqualified her already. O well. :/

who cares! she was the best singer that AI has ever seen and she should have won the whole thing whether she was a backup singer or not. No one knew who she was as a backup singer so now everyone knows her and she'll finally get her own record deal. Simon's gonna sign her and you know it. just because she's had experience doesn't mean that she always wants to be behind someone for the rest of her life. you need to get over yourseldf and except the fact that she was amazing and everyone and i mean everyone couldn't help but love her. how can you say you like her? you just ratted her out and harped about her. you cannot lie like that. either you like her or you don't. make a choice. and don't harp on her ever again, you hear me? NEVER!!!!!!! i i definetly don NOT agree with you! now who agrees with me?

I liked Melinda, thought she was the best singer of the season and thought for sure she would win.

My 14 year old son likes Blake. He has said Blake should win, and a lot of his friends also like Blake, from early in the season.

Maybe this is one time my son is right and I am wrong, lol.

Yeah, I agree. I think Melinda might be the best vocalist but I still dont vote for her. She's kinda boring and not fun to watch.

Vote for Blake so that Melinda will go home instead of him!!

I'm not a big Melinda fan. She has a great voice but that's about it. She lacks personality and charisma as a performer, in my opinion. Blake and Jordin are far less polished. I love watching both of them and I'm always waiting to see what they'll do next. If Melinda wins I think it will be a real waste. I can see her disappearing right off the face of the Earth after that. Rubin Studdard anyone? Or Taylor Hicks? Where are they? What are they doing now? hmmmm....
