U.S. popularity has plunged across much of the world amid mounting perceptions that the United States is running roughshod over other nations and doing too little to help poor countries.

The trend is particularly acute across the Muslim world, where growing numbers of people see the anti-terror campaign as a way for the United States to bully its Islamic foes.

Growing anti-Americanism could make it increasingly difficult for leaders of democratic nations to support controversial U.S. initiatives, such as President Bush's call for assertive action against Iraq. It also threatens the stability of autocratic regimes that back U.S. policies.

In some cases American Popularity has fallen by 30% with countries that are allies.

The very reason you're loosing popularity is because of your ignorance and arrogance - something very reflective in your responces.

My how the mighty will fall...

No it doesn't.
This isn't high school.
I could care less how popular we are, if we are doing the right thing and staying true to our principles.

Yes. Our companies have to work with other countries to do business there. There is some hope with some more pro-American leaders being elected; however, these people will be pretty short-lived if they don't somewhat follow their people's beliefs. France is particularly dangerous as Sarkozy wants to drastically change some labor laws in France. I basically think most countries are waiting for Bush to make his graceful exit from the white house in a couple of years. Relations will likely warm up a bit after that time.

Absolutely. It has never concerned me tha tthe US is unpopular in some quarters--in some cases the bad of some scum is a compliment.

But the tragedy today is that America is losing respect. This country is historically "the last, best hope of mankind" (T. Paine)--more than jsut a symbol, but a living example of freedom, democracy, and justice. Not perfect, but always striving to become better.

Now, increaingly, we are seen as an aggressor and as disregarding human rights--a nation that has descended to the barbarism of torture and religious hatred. These things are NOT ture of the great majority of Americans--but the rest of the world can only judge by what they see--and what they see is a disgrace.

So a friend of mine somewhere in this world sent me this video about America. My head was in my hands before it was a quarter way through. But I began thinking about the fact that if you do not know about neighboring countries and what historically has occurred in their lives, it is difficult to develop empathy, let alone understanding. Many American's are a product of what we are "spoon fed" through the media. Yes I know there is supposed to be separation of church and state, but many of the fundamental church's serve up a sermon of "whip ***" and "you are Jesus's soldiers" on many Sunday's. This was especially true post 9/11. In reaction to that perspective you have other politician's, from the other party with reactionary agenda's to the "whip ***" yet, they are fairly certain you need their help to buy your toilet tissue, what brand to buy, and how to apply it. Therefore we have a lot of folks in the US who are dependent upon the very government they abhor at times. Point is they realize we have sooo many problems here, we should take our nose out of the backyard of our neighbors, and maybe if we had consistently done that 9/11 would have been avoided. Perhaps.

Now let's watch the video. And for those of you who do know a country that begins with "U" I apologize in advance. ( big toothy smile )

As you can see by the responses to the questions asked, many Americans do not have a clue about other countries. They do not know basic math. Basic geography. Basic historical facts. They cannot distiguish between an extremist group and a religion and frighteningly throw them into the same category. And when that happens you have a lot of sheep that can be manipulated into any position IMO. It occurs to me that many in this country are struggling day to day with their own issues of survival: family and all the relationship stuff it comes with, money, jobs, health, etc.

Ok maybe we are a bit narcissitic...a bit selfish...but I still do not know why anyone could not figure out a country that begins with"U"?

In my opinion, there is not one country that hates America more than America.. that is why we as a nation allow someone else such as a president govern us and then complain about it when he veto's what we ask for because he knows what is best for us.

That is why we provide criminals beds to sleep in, television, recreation, and at least two meals a day.. so that they feel at home in the building that our taxes pay for and don't mind doing the same thing they did to land in jail/prison again after they get out. They are treated more humane than most of the law abiding citizens.

And the list can go on but it would take me all night and I have work to do.

Yes, it does concern me. There was a time when the
United States had such great respect, that you could
feel it, now, not so much.
Other countries are now surpassing us in science, math &
technology. If our arrogance continues, these countries
might not be so willing to share.

So we are supposed to change the way we operate and protect ourselves and our allies in light of some unfavorable opinions? How is that standing up for our beliefs and citizens? That sounds like political expediency to me, and bowing at the altar of butt-kissing. Kind of like the really pretty and popular girl at school trying to force everyones attention to the barely noticable pimple on her forehead so that she looks less "perfect" in order to please all of the jealous people who hate her because she is so pretty...Why belittle ourselves to earn some "political popularity" points. I can guarantee that we as a country would come to their aid if they needed help, but I doubt they would reciprocate...

Oh it doesn't matter. It's just the administration that you don't like. Once a Liberal is elected, the world will once love us again. I mean, look at the impact of American culture worldwide. They love us! (except orthodox Muslims)

Not really, empires always die when the citizens are too lazy to eliminate fools from leadership. It is not just the Muslims, find out about the Italian resistance to the US Military plans to expand bases in their country, Poland and the resistance to Bush's anti missile plans, for samplers. Don't worry, the US inability to address global warming will doom the whole world so the US won't have to own up to its failures as a world leader.

And who in the international community is worthy of my concern? Certainly not the Spaniards, who turn tail chicken and run at the first sign of adversity. Who are now attempting to persecute/prosecute several of our soldiers for having "murdered" a couple of their news correspondents who got caught up in a cross fire in the war zone...
Or, the Italians who are also persecuting one of our soldiers for having "murdered" one of their secret service agents who refused to stop as ordered at a U.S. check point, after having gained the release of one of their news correspondents. The Italian government ordered their Red Cross doctors to give aid to a couple of "insurgents" who'd been wounded in a gun battle with the U.S. military... I should be concerned about what THEY think?
The Russians? Germans? French? Oh! I get it! I should be concerned about what the Iranians think! What is this? High School? I'm NOT Bill Clinton, and I don't are about opinion polls. Opinions are like... Get my drift? Maybe you should concern yourself more with doing what is right, just and good instead of taking the easy way out and crying over what others think. Had our illustrious Commander In Chief (Bill) paid a little more attention to the intel we were providing him and less to Monica... Water under the bridge I suppose, or just another small stain on her blouse.

I am so old I remember the time when an American could travel any where in the world and have no fear. No one would dare touch or harass an American.

Why was that?
