Caesar was killed because he had taken over the government of Rome, by military force. The Senate was a body of men who expected to run Rome for their own benefit and could not do so as long as Caesar was alive.

They saw him as a tyrant, a man who would be king--which went against the whole history of the Roman Republic, and so they plotted against and assassinated Caesar.

The Romans had been ruled by Etruscan kings. After they expel them, they created a Republic, with two consuls. The Romans were very afraid of having only one ruler, because they believed that he would held too much power in his hands, like the kings before.
Later, the republic was ruled by triumvirates, that fought among themselves and Cesar became the winner.
Some people in the senate were afraid of Cesar becoming a king and they decided to kill him.
Ironically, after the struggle that ensued, came the roman empire, with all the power centered in the emperor, the very thing that the conspirators wanted to prevent
