rap has a more hard edge and hardcore lrics, while hip- hop has a more r&bish feel. it has more of a groove to it. hip hop has more of a crossover appeal. but as far as lyricism, it deals with a lot of the same issues.

Don't listen to what they say. That ''rap is more like rhyming and hip hop is mostly singing'' - is not true.
Rap is basically words recited rapidly and rhythmically which usually rhyme, over an instrumental backing.
While Hip-Hop is the music genre which has rapping in it.
There are many music genres which have rap in them, the main ones Hip Hop and RnB
Hip Hop (which is the main one and is basically rapping over a continuous instrumental beat)
RnB, which stands for Rhythm and Blues is pop music and singing (usually at the chorus) with rapping at the verses. It's more ''melodical'' than hip hop.
Other sub-genres which have rap are:
hardcore hip hop, gangsta rap, ghetto rap, hip pop, rap rock and so on, I can spend an hour listing them out.
So let's recap:
Rap is the type of singing - rhyming words rapidly in a rhythm over a beat (or without a beat). Rap is not a music genre, however people call all music genres which contain rapping, Rap, just like Hip Hop.
Hip-Hop is the music genre which has rapping in it.
(Extra info: Hip Hop artists are called rappers because that's what they do, obviously. They are rarely called 'hip-hoppers')
Sorry for all that long information, I tried to explain it the best way. I hope I helped. Peace.

Rap, is its own Genre as where hip hop is a mix of R&B and blues, so to really tell the difference you need to understand that Hip hop is the music its more synthesized and like she said 2 stepped as where rap is the equivelant of freedom there is no single way to do it you have to feel the flow and rap to it and hip hop well if you dont do it right there gunna hate on you...i personally like Rap more because of the wild side and the non conformity, i can rap however whatever whenever i want but hip hop is a science to the "down to earth people" so therefore another class to take in school.

Let me give you a civilized answer. They are the same term. The hyphen is how some people spell the word, but the correct spelling is without the hyphen. Since you can change the name of the genre on iTunes, put the song under "hip hop" without the hyphen, and don't add "rap".

Rap and Hip Hop refer to the different time periods of the genre. Just like Blues became Rock and Rock became Grunge, Rap became Hip Hop. Rap songs in the early days typically consisted of a studio-produced instrumental track behind the rapper, with bits of scratching or sampling throughout. The obvious examples of early Rap are The Sugarhill Gang, Grandmaster Flash and Run DMC. As time went on, DJ’s started to figure more prominently in rap music - Run DMC had Jam Master Jay, Public Enemy had Terminator X, but for the most part the DJ remained a backup player to the rapper. It is debated when the Hip-Hop age really began, but most agree it was around the early 90’s with groups like Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, The Pharcyde, and Freestyle Fellowship. During this time, you begin to see the DJ emerge as an essential member of the group. Scratching becomes more prominent throughout the music and even plays alongside the rapper. Rap groups became more like rock bands or jazz ensembles - each artist bringing their own influence to the song. Indeed, over time, Rap groups even started to include live bands, like The Roots or Arrested Development. Rap music was no longer just about the rapper. Maybe that’s why they changed the name.
Sadly, we refer to all Rap music as Hip Hop now, but the DJ has become less of a factor in popular rap music today. Rap has become canned and commercial and produced to death thanks to chumps like Kanye.
Peace.

Every one who says that rap is more "hard edge" and hip-hop has more an "r&bish feel" is stupid. Hip hop is the lifestyle rap is the music genre. Tupac Shakur is the greatest of all time. Hip hop started in 1970 in New York. http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hip_hop read this. And listen to Tupac Shakur N.W.A Dr Dre. REAL HIP HOP. Xxx

No one knows what these two things are. Trying to pigeon-hole a thing into a name and description doesn't fix it's form. The same problem is inherent in trying to mold any language into a frozen descriptive gestalt. If it's a language then it lives and grows and shape-shifts and therefore it has no definition. It is what it is at any moment. Trying to label a thing is futility. Call it what you will but don't try to define it. You will never pin it down.
