The President has the power to veto acts of Congress, to declare martial law or state of emergency and power of control over local governments.

In all reality not much. Congress holds much of the power, that is why I don't understand why 3rd parties don't try to get more people elected to Congress instead.
Besides being Commander in Chief of the military, and the power to Veto or Pardon, there just isn't much more he can do.
He can not even appoint his cabinet with out the approval of congress.
