i have a 98 lumina. 2 months after getting the used vehicle which was in terrific shape..(no warranty),,,i started hearing a thump in back end...my dad being a self taught mechanic has no clue what it is. the thump is in the back end driver side. my dad has replaced bearing, and still has the thumping. my 300lb husband bounced on back end and no thumping. when going over bumps it is loud. no shifty driving or anything just loud rattling when over bumps. we have changed tires and still have a problem. noticed alot of bad wear on back tires though. i was told 98 lumina has shocks in back not struts but everything seems to be great...except my dad noticed the rotor in back driver side is not flushing up like it should be making it where you can pull tire slightly in and out...but he does not undertand why. caliper looks great also. if any one has any clues let me know. we have been dealing with this for over a year. it is getting worse and i have 2 babies. i dont feel safe.

Safety first- Please take your lumina to your local chevy dealership. Ask the shop foreman to drive the car with you.In a short time he can tell you whats going on.My best guess without seeing the car you have a bad hub-bearing.

i own a repair shop and it sounds like it has a bad bearing in it or the axle nut is not tightened up right on it,and the wheel is trying to come loose on it,that will cause this to happen on any vehicle id jack it up and check it out real good it might have a an axle nut backing loose on it or something, and that can be dangerous to drive like that, one thing for sure it needs to be checked out,why don't you have it checked at a local garage and see what they say about it,they might be able to offer some better hands on opinion of it,and they usually don't charge anything just to check them out, good luck, hope this helps.

I'm going to have to agree with Master T on this one, it's proably the strut (and he's right about the "axle" nut)
