I like both very much. I would prefer to live in Brooklyn but Chicago is a lot cheaper. Both are great places and I have lived in both but if cost is a factor then Chicago is more practical.

I myself am biased towards NY, but Chicago is a cheaper and interesting place to live. There is no place cheap to live in NY anymore - I think it's killing the city's creativity. Both have a good mix of people and excellent public transport, but if you are young and just starting out, I'd say you should pick Chicago.
