They were fifth cousins. Also FDR's wife was Therodore Roosevelts neice making her and FDR cousins also. I think that would name them sixth cousins or something like that. Eleanor's last name was Roosevelt before she married FDR.

The conventional "wisdom" is that they were fifth cousins, but I think they actually were SIXTH cousins. According to this graphic

they shared a great-great-great-great-great grandparent. You share a great-grandparent with your 2nd cousins. 1 great = 2nd cousins, 5 greats (their case) = 6th cousins. If I'm right, then Eleanor would be FDR's sixth cousin, once removed (and vice versa).
