I had a science teacher once who said they cannot experience love the way humans can. They act like they love us, but it is just an act to get a steady supply of food. I recently heard a scientist say your pet cat would eat your dead carcass if it had a chance.

Nope. Pets don't love us because they are not self aware.

They show affection to the person who feeds and cares for them.

Anyone who has ever had to adopt a pet from a loving family forced by circumstances to give up their beloved pet knows that the pet's affections will transfer to the new owners, if they're treated well. The original family is forgotten in a matter of weeks, if they have no contact with the pet.

Yes, there are exceptions, stories of incredible journeys over snow-capped hills to reunite with loved ones. I don't mean to bum anybody out. But no, your cat loves the wielder of the mighty can opener, and your turtle couldn't care less.

Giving the animal the power to deceive is equal to the capacity to love. This scientist said they do not love the way humans do, that is not to say they do not love. And about the 'eating your dead carcass' hypothesis, it is not beneath human possibility to do the same thing. The word 'pet' does not convey a specified animal. Animals react differently to different people and their treatments.

I think you are correct about cats; they are more selfish than dogs.

~~~ Hi music zone, your Science Teacher was wrong. Our pets do love us, especially when we love them in return. As for them to just act like they do to get food and shelter....well that's plain stupid. Yes, they're dependant on us for such things but we took it upon ourselves to provide it in the first place when we decided to get a pet. That goes without saying. The Scientist you recently heard is correct. If we were layyyyyying there dead and our cat was starving to death ,we'd be feasted on. It's survival. We'd eat our dead cat if that's what we had to do in a similar situation. Your pets show you love in the ways of their species do. Dogs like to be with you,sleep with you,etc. Same with cats. read a book,and you'll get an idea of how animals show affectiion. So, yes we're loved by our pets. Don't betray them, and think they don't. ~~~
Yes. They love us. w/o prejudice, w/o judgement, w/o caring when u get home..only that u r home. Not caring if u are ugly or pretty. They just love uncondtionally. They come whne u cry. The get excited whne u r happy!Look into ur pest eyes and tell me that u dont think they love u.
(doesnt apply to fish and oither pets of that nature.
Goldfish only have a 3 second memory so they just dont know hue u r!
Yes of course!
Dogs are unfailingly devoted and dependent on you. Very needy. Cats are more independent, yet they still love you. When I come home my cat greets me with a hello (pronounced "meow") and rubs against my leg. I pick her up & hug her & she nuzzles her head against my neck. She follows me around wherever I go & when I play guitar & sing she sits next to me & purrs. She sleeps next to me at night. She's an angel. I can't imagine life without her. A cat is the soul of a home.
More than any person could love us.
People have too many emotional hangups.
Animals are thankful, grateful for all the things we do for them.
Example, when an animal is hurt, they deal with the injury themselves.
When a pet is hurt, it comes running to you to deal with the pet's injury. It KNOWS you will make things better.
Of course everyone always wants to think that their dog or cat loves them but is it really love or just loyalty and dependency.
It's lovely to believe they do, and that's good enough for me.
