Is there a quick fix to trade it in w/o telling the dealer? I heard that you can crack an egg and put it in the radiator and this will help hide the problem. I dumped about 4 teaspoons of black pepper in the radiator in order to get it home. Does anyone have any other suggestions?

How sure are you the head gasket has failed? For your information, head gasket failures are only most common on the '95 model year Windstars. In 1996, Ford changed the upper intake and cylinder head design of this engine. What IS more prone to fail, are the lower intake gaskets though. When they do fail, the symptoms are almost identical to a head gasket failure. The common point of failure on these particular engines is between the coolant passages and the intake passages on the outer corners. The cost of the entire gasket set through fordparts.com is $43.51 US (part number F68Z-9433-C) plus coolant and oil. Add about 4 to 6 hours labour, and that should give you an idea of the cost of this repair. If you choose to carry out this repair, I would ask the mechanic to clean out the EGR passages in the intake while it's apart. Hope this helps.

Go to the parts store and ask for K@W block seal.If you follow the instrucyions exactly like it says it will last for awhile.You can't mix it with coolant or it want work so you have to flush as much of the anti-freeze out that you can.Mix the block seal in a gallon jug an shake it up.Pour it into your radiator and fill it ithw water.let the vehicle run for about half an hour then drain.I have used this product before an my best results come when i had completly removed the thermostat so it could circulate better.Then you are suppose to drain it and let it dry inside of the block for at least 14 hours.I took loose the bottom radiator hose and let it set to dry out.The next day I refilled it with anti-freeze and it run like it never had the problem.I have done this to a friends car that was having hard times and had to repeat the process a couple of times and it got her threw almost 2 years.

the windstar's have had a problem with leaking intake manifold gaskets. if losing coolant and running rough but not overpressurizing the radiator or overheating suspect the intake gaskets this is a much more worthwhile job than getting a new payment book for 5 plus years.

the head gasket can be checked by a non mechanic by checking the antifreeze reservoir for the presents on oil, bubbles or air coming out of the radiator cap area while running with the cap off(keep in mind when the thermostat opens there is some normal fluctuation in the radiator), the last things to look for is the oil dipstick coming out with a milky looking substance on it also pop off your oil cap and look at the underside for a milky white buildup on it

head gasket or cracked head? there is too much
pressure for a pepper or any of those fixes.. too check
on head gasket or cracked head. look in radiator for
bubbles..
