'factors' and 'terms' are both just numbers (or expressions). 'factors' imply that multiplication is involved, whereas 'terms' doesn't.

1. 12 = 2 x 6 ; 12 = 2 x 2 x 3
2. 12 = 8 + 4 ; 12 = 6 + 6
3. 12 = 2 x ( 4 + 2 )

12 = 4 x 3
12 = 2 x 3 x 4
12 = 4 + 8
12 = 2 + 4 + 6
12 = 2 x 6 (where 6 = 4 + 2)
