On 30 April 1945, after intense street-to-street combat, when Soviet troops were spotted within a block or two of the Reich Chancellory in the city centre, Hitler committed suicide in the Führerbunker, shooting himself while simultaneously biting into a cyanide capsule. Hitler's body and that of Eva Braun (his long-term mistress whom he had married the day before) were put in a bomb crater,[citation needed] doused in gasoline by Otto Günsche and other Führerbunker aides, and set alight

Yes, I have heard the story that Hitler did not die in the bunker but died some time later. The body they discovered was known as a doppleganger or one of Hitler's many doubles that the Russians discovered around the bunker . This could also have been Soviet propaganda to boost the Red Army and Stalin 's status. I believe what really happened was that Hitler and his wife Eva Braun commited suicide the day after they got married on April 30,1945. Evacommitted suicide by cyanide and Hitler shooting himself in the head.

Cuddly L sums it up nicely; well done. The Russians recovered part of Hitlers burned body and actually still retain his teeth; the dental work was examined and compared to German dental records and they are a 100% match; Hitler did in fact die in the bunker as Cudldy L says.

For many years I was given to believe that Hitler shot himself while his mistress, Eva Braun took cyanide. That was the common understanding here in the 'West' since his body was seen with a bullet wound in the head before it was burned.
A few years ago, after the collapse of the Soviet Union, I recall reading that it was revealed that the Russians had Hitler's remains in storage somewhere and that Hitler's personal valet, who had been the first to find the bodies, actually was the one who shot Hitler in the head to disguise the fact that he had taken his cyanide pill, not being brave enough to shoot himself.
This was the apparent testimony of Adolf Hitler's personal valet.

Aldolf Hitler committed suicide sy shooting himself with a pistol. A lot of different rumors are and have been going around. The people who took care of Hitlers body actually burned his corpse outside of the bunker.

in addition to all of the above and trying to not be repetitive-
Hitler opted not to escape to the Alpine redoubt, and instead resigned himself to his fate in Berlin- and all actions leading up to his death clearly point that he was not going to attempt to escape.
-There was a doppleganger found- but his body was never mistaken for Hitlers
-Hitlers jaw bone was presented to Stalin and is in the Russian Archives-
There is no shred of credible evidence, real or circumstansial to indicate anything other then the death of Hitler in April 1945- the details can be disputed- but it is clear that that is when he died.

Hitler took a cyanide pill and then shot himself, because he didn't want to face capture and public humiliation. The Germans then burned his body.

Yeah, there are rumors that he fled off to Argentina
with a number of other SS and Nazis.
However, if you think about it, is it that surprising
that people would like to believe he isn't dead?
Its rather like why people like to believe in ghosts
and destiny - the reality seems so mundane.
His end just doesn't seem to fit his life - so lets
simply make up something else.
No, I think he died at his own hand, in a bunker
in sight of Eva Braun.
