the clutch may need to be adjusted. our craftsman did that recently and all i had to do was get under it and tighten a bolt down and it fixed the problem. try looking by the back wheels underneath where the clutch cable connects. there should be a bar that is sorta bent like a z. that little bar is pulled forward when you push the clutc in. you may need to tighten the bolt that holds that little z type bar. if thats not it then it's possible the trans is messed up or the clutch system.I can't agree with the first answer, we have had our craftsman for almost 10 years now. good luck!!! hope this helps.

I would disconect the shift linkage from the transmission. This should tell you if the linkage is the problem or if the problem is internal to the transmission. While your under there you could also look to make sure that there is nothing jammed in the linkage stopping it from moving. Have you tried moving the mower back and forth while trying to move the shift lever?
