The Orleans is in no shape, manner or form a "dump"
AND it's NOT "far" from the strip or a "10 minute" cab ride >It's 1 mile West of the strip< So unless your cab is a camel, it's not going to take 10 minutes.
The Orleans has a free shuttle to the center of the strip from 9:30am- Midnight. You can also catch the city(CAT) bus 24 hours a day, and it stops right in front of the Orleans.
This is their web site
http://www.orleanscasino.com
I have stayed there a week or two each year since they opened in 98(I think it was)
We were there for 10 days in December> Room 1640, awesome view of the strip.
The Orleans rooms are a very nice, over size 450sq ft - The rooms have a sitting area, a desk for work, high speed internet connection, coffee maker, blow dryer,iron/board, closet, safe, and you can get a mini frige on request. The bathrooms are not very large, but it's kind of a nice touch that they have a small window you can actually open.
The swimming pool is nice >not great.
The Buffet is one of the best for the $$ in all of LV.
The Courtyard Cafe is a very nice place to grab a bite, especially if you're a night owl or an early riser. Their graveyard special are among the best in LV.
Biscuits & Gravy - $1.95
Eggs & Bacon or Sausage - $2.45
Pancakes & Ham + 1 Egg - $2.45
Ham & Eggs + Hashbrowns & Toast - $3.45
Steak & Eggs + Hashbrowns & Toast - $3.45
One of the very best "moderate" price steakhouses in all of LV. "The Prime Rib Loft"
My favorite place for burgers in LV
Terrible Mike's - 1/3lb burgers - separate "fixins" table to doctor up your burger - free fries and drink with coupons from the Orleans "funbook"
They have several fast food choices besides Terrible Mike's, Subway for one and a Seattle's best coffee shop(I think it is, I'm not a coffee drinker)>There are also 8 or 9 Restaurants to choose from< There is also a small snack "shack" close to the sports book that sells $1 hotdogs.
The gift shop sells chips and dip, water, pop, milk, etc at a price barely above grocery store prices.> A large bag of Tostitos chips & dip were $2.99 each.
The Orleans has it's own arena for events, hockey games, etc
Rick Thomas has a magic show at the Orleans >This is a very nice show and a good value. >white tigers<
The Orleans has an 18 screen movie theater, a 70 lane bowling allery, and arcade, Kids Tyme, A business center, Terrible's Wine & Liquor which has the best prices you're going to find anywhere, they guarantee it, I know I can't buy it at home for their prices.
The "Alligator" bar is too cool.
The Orleans "slot club" >Club Coast< is one of the best in all of LV for free/casino rate offers on rooms. If you stay there & play a little you can expect to receive an offer for free or cut rate rooms. Hint >If you both run 2K(about 2 hours quarter VP play) or more through a machine per day, sign up for separate accounts. This way you will get twice as many free nights + they usually throw in extras on the marketing offers such as free show tickets or buffets, free plays, etc. You might as well get two.
The Club Coast awards points on a "coin out" rather than "coin in" like most LV casinos. So you accumulate points much quicker when you're winning. Points can be used for cash back or comps. They often have "double point" days. Be sure to use the free 1000 point coupon in your free "funbook" when you sign up. >They will give you the "funbook" at checkin, this is one of the very best "funbooks" in all of LV.
Club Coast awards cash back/comps at a rate of .3% which is over 3 times higher than most slot clubs in LV. >Gotta love those double point days :-) >Most casinos are at or below .1% when it comes to CB & comps!
Trip Advisor has the Orleans rated as the #2 best value hotel in the WORLD. >I guess they missed the "dump" part >LOL
http://www.tripadvisor.com
We go to LV 2-3 times a year for 2 weeks or more at a time and have for over 20 years. The Orleans is one of our favorites and we take friends and family there all the time. >though this may be a mistake, as some refuse to stay anywhere else<

It entirely depends on what you are looking for in your Vegas hotel. The Orleans is great if you are looking for a decent room and good gambling and reasonable food. As others have said, it is off strip so a car is a must.
If this is a trip to see the sights of Vegas or for partying, I would chose something on the strip so you can just easily walk out of your hotel and go where ever you want and not have to drive.

I've stayed there a couple of times for conventions, it's not even close to a dump. The rooms are clean and nice, but nothing special. It doesn't have any really nice restaurants but they are good. It has lots of things for a family to do, or a group of people. It has a decent casino and a great poker room.
However it is far from the strip and nothing special. If you want to save money, there are better ways to do it than stay at the Orleans. As with any hotel, it depends on why you want to stay there.

The Orleans is a complete dump. I hope you haven't made reservations. It's not even on the strip. Orleans is about a 10 minute cab drive on Tropicana. There are several on strip options you have, don't stay at the orleans.
