I agree with you 100%. I was completely disappointed when I saw McRaney stretched on the kitchen table dead. He was the glue of the show that held the main characters together. I have no idea what the writers and producers were thinking when they decided to kill him of. I just hope that he will have recurring roles in flashback scenes.
As for the people, do you not remember that a lot of refugees came into Jericho.
As for Newburn many people came into the city to work the military factory and they were promised land and salt from Jericho to keep them loyal.
I love the show

They took off Gerald McRaney because he has a heart condition (in real life) and can't do something for too long...so bounces around from show to show...and takes time off in between. From what I heard, while he was shooting Jericho, he was really ill...but not to worry about who will hold everyone together...Jake will. He'll take his father's ability to hold everything and everryone together.

Mercenaries, perhaps? When it showed shots of New Bern, it seemed to be around the same size as Jericho, if not smaller.
Unless buildings were destroyed.
On a side note; be sure to write CBS about renewing Jericho. May sweeps is coming up, and there is a chance it won't be renewed, as it hasn't been doing so hot after the hiatus.

Preston was a little harsh about the first few episodes, but series one does get better towards the end. I have not seen series 2 yet, so I can't wait... I have never seen anyone be abe to pull off going around with their mouth open in incredulity the way Skeet Ulrich manages it! He would be so cool as a companion in Doctor Who, perhaps as Captain Jack's colleague or something.

I'm dumbfounded that they killed him off. But I think they did a great job with the writing in this episode...bringing everything full circle and all...Jake will be the leader...glad that Heather is alive...(I am always for the underdog LOL). And seriously, what is up with the USA flag? How many stars was on it? 25?

According to TV Guide, they killed off a major character (i.e., former Mayor Green) to move the story arc in a different direction for the next season.
