I'd approach it from the point of view of unfulfilled expectations. You dream of something happening, and then it doesn't happen. What then? Do you give up dreams of dream more and have more hopes? Compare it to Romeo and Juliette or any other story of unfulfilled love, of things hoped for that don't end.
