--and are there really Americans, some in places of power and authority, whose desire it is to have a nation run like one in which real liberty, individual freedom, legitimate elections, and human rights are replaced by a police state with fascist government authoritarianism and control of the people by military force? Instead of world peace these authoritarians seek U.S. supremacy? Are there a large number of Americans WHO ACTUALLY WANT THIS, or is it that most anti-liberals don't realize what they are doing when they support the Bush administration's use of the military and invasion of privacy?

With all due respect to the opinions and spelling of other posters (the word is histrionic), in point of fact there have been serious circumscriptions of the civil rights of Americans in the last several years. Particularly in regards to search and seizure, due process (notably the right of habeas corpus), and in expanding the ability to monitor the activity of its citizens, the Patriot Acts have weakened our rights to privacy and protection from government involvement in our lives.

It strikes me odd that conservatives who say the government should keep out of people's lives (usually in the arena of economics) are so blithe about the issue of privacy. The explanation of "having nothing to fear if you are not a terrorist" is a rationale which has its heart the presumption of guilt instead of innocence. To give our friends on the right the benefit of the doubt, perhaps this is not a paradox in their minds.

Whether this constitutes the start of a police state is much more difficult to say. Short-term memory Americans forget that many of the civil rights and protections we hold so important were hard-won in the 1960's and 70's. I think those rights are true to the intent of the Constitution--certainly a strict constructionist (Mr. Bush claims to be one) would see the role of government in people's personal affairs as extremely limited. But again, in a historical context, the protections of those freedoms are a relatively recent phenomenon.

I think the question might be posed differently: do we want to return to the days when the federal government did pretty much what it pleased or do we want to ensure our freedoms are not just penned words on an old piece of parchment?

I know how I would answer. Cheers.

people really do not believe it can happen, they really need to take a look at how many freedoms are being taken away.
The Country is very close to becoming Bankrupt, and the push for more money just keeps coming in. Our troops are so strung out, if we would to have a major attack, it would be the police force, and what is left of the National Guard to defend us. People really need to wake up and smell the coffee. The Crime rate has risen to a near outbreak of war in itself. Put politics back where it belongs in the hands of CAPABLE people.

The Patriot Act tracks suspected terrorists. If you are not a terrorist, you shouldn't worry about it. And it's better that the Iraqis have an elected gov't than keep them under the genocidal dictatorship of Saddam Hussein.

And I have not lost one right since Bush became President, except maybe the right to not hear crazy liberals bash the President. I'm not getting controlled by military force, and if Bush wanted to institute a police state, why aren't you in jail for bashing him?

Dummy.

Yes, it's obvious by the rights we have lost and the idiocy of decisions from the White House--all power-based.

Yes, this has been in the works since the early sixties. Ike tried to warn us but the U.S. pentagon has turned on it's own people.
