If you've heard of hydroponics then you would know with the proper nutrients in water almost any plant can grow without soil.

I'm assuming you are talking about the environment.

Tundra type climates (too cold - no trees) not much soil

very little soil just what has broken up from the rocks - very short growing season ground almost always frozen a few inches below the surface.

mosses and lichens grow quite well - only need a miniscule of soil. - see site below

Plants can not live without the rich nutrients soil contains. If there is a plant like this I have never seen or heard of it.

Sweet Potatos grow extremely well in just water. Cut the sweet potato in half and suspend it above a jar of water with just an in or two actually in the water. In about 3-5 days you will see growths from the potato's eyes and they will continue to gro as long as you keep watering the plant. It will also grow roots.

Granted, the sweet potato would probably grow larger and faster if nutrients are added regularly and no seeds or potato's are grown without cross pollination, but who wants a room full of potatos?
