I was coming home from the local bar at about 2:30 am the other night and I tried to do my usual bit of tripping some of the neighbors car alarms with my eagle pipes. This time however I wasn't as successful as usual and could only trigger a couple of alarms. So instead I made a few full throttle passes up and down the block as I, and every other true Harley guy, know how much people totally appreciate the sound of a Harley. But what pipes can I get that will deliver more of that crowd pleasing rumble and that will set off more car alarms? I started to feel a little inadequate when I couldn't set any car alarms off.

Many other people have answered this question, and wisely, I might add, but I would like to give a word of warning.
Reducing back pressure to gain performance is one thing, but straight pipes totally eliminate back pressure and raise the temperature at the exhaust valve to dangerously high levels. You have heard the term, "burned valves", right. If it is your intention to spend most of your riding time in the shop working on your bike doing endless head jobs over and over, then straight pipes are for you.

An added benefit of straight pipes is the money you will be putting into your local community when you pay the tickets. Not everyone appreciates the sound of a loud Harley or car alarms going off at 2:30am.

I'll say GROW UP!!!

Do you think that your grand parents appreciate this type of noise at 2:30 am???

I have loud pipes too but as soon as I hit a residential area I try to keep the noise down as much possible. I only use it for safety reason when on the road full of cars.

Does a loud pipe makes you feel more like a man???
If yes then you need counseling!

By the way if you are here complaining like a them little kid then you probably did not set any alarms at all even at full throttle.

Go to the local music store and find the loudest amp they have. Mount it securely to the back seat of your bike. Mount a microphone close to the end of your exhaust pipe, and connect it to your amp. Now find the longest extension cord you can get and tie it to your ankle to keep it from getting unplugged from the amp. Fire up your bike and turn the amp as loud as it will go. Ride the bike at full throttle down the street.

When you get to the end of the extension cord your leg will come off and you will know that the whole idea was silly to begin with and that you should not be riding at all.

Here's what you get....you get the balls to go over to that guy and talk about the back pressure he's losing by going with straight pipes (they are losing horse power). If that doesn't work, you get a harley. I used to be that guy laying on a hamock putting my head together and wham..the sound that made my knuckles go white. Then one day, I bought a basket case and I've been bringing down property values ever since. Good luck.

Well, going illegal is the easyest way. You could remove the silencers, or maybe install a straight pipe, when you down gear the engine pops and puishes out flames from the exhaust. its not bad, but its sounds excellent, and if you are a true harley man thats the route you will take.

That's a great question. I felt the same way the other day. I was cruising through the Castro and just felt like my pipes weren't loud enough to get the looks I was hoping for. I was thinking about taking my pipes off altogether. Maybe with my pipes off, some dude will want to give me his pipe! ;)

I suggest some vertically oriented riser stacks, like tractor-trailers use. Maybe you could place one at about the same level as your ear, and the other, on the side toward the curb, could be directed straight at the car alarm using plumbing fittings or maybe drier ducting in keeping with the rest of HD's technology. Coincidentally, that should also be the same height as your neighbor's windows. If that doesn't work, I saw this really cool sound warfare device on the discovery channel...

Get them 2 3/4" Hard Krome pipes.. You'll be setting off them damn car alarms over in the next county. They are long, thick and have the word "hard" in the name.

If your neighbor with the Harley is pissing you off, grow a set and go talk to him. Whining about it here will do nothing for your problem.
