The Cold War began in 1945, when World War II ended. At this point, the Soviets and America did not have any reason to be allies anymore (Hitler and the Nazi party had fallen) The Cold War ended in 1991 when the Berlin Wall fell and the Soviets gradually lost power over its countries in Europe.

It's not exactly the easiest thing to pinpoint a beginning and an end as there was no "declaration of cold war" per se. Probably the best answer would be from the end of World War II in 1945 to the dissolution of the U.S.S.R. in December 1991.

The Cold War lasted from the late 1940's until 1989. It wasn't so much an actual war as a time frame where there was a great amount of tension, and competition between the Soviet and US governments.

Even though the two nations had been allies against Natzi Germany in WWII they disagreed on how to reconstruct the post-war world.
