Sorry, we have leash law so they pick them up. Honest - it is the strangest law in our city. I have never been owned a cat that would walk on a leash.
On the horse farm, we used red flaked pepper. Reapply every 2-3 months.

Go to your local hardware store, such as OSH, and go purchase some cat and dog relpellent. Sprinkle it along a couple of "cool cat" places, and the kitties will stay away =]

I've used ground black pepper. Since dogs (and cats) smell something before they use it for a toilet, the pepper is an annoying smell, and they will not stay.

any kind of a citrus spray around the perimeter of your yard. I know the product citrisolve works.

It's not easy...... they are mainly probably looking for a place to defecate. Place moth balls around your garden areas to help deter them from using those areas that have soft soil.
