It would be easiest to paint it before you install the trim. Then install the trim with finishing nails. Fill the holes with putty. Then paint over the putty.

If you have this luxury - Paint the wall with out trim on. Paint trim while off the wall.

(If the trim is already on the wall then just paint it and tape it off. You will chance breaking pieces if you take it off.)

Then you will not need to do any delicate painting. When you nail it to wall after it is painted just touch up those nailing areas with a dab of paint and you're finished.

If you paint trim on wall it will be a long tedious venture, unless you put something in between wall and trim and then you have to worry about floor too.

Good luck!

I like to paint first and then install. After the trim is on (and if I use nails) I use a nail set and and fill the nail holes with spackeling, rub smooth, then just paint over the holes. Its faster this way cause you dont have to be afraid of getting paint on the wall. It will look professional and no one will be able to see the nail holes.
Good Luck!

For the most professional look, paint it before putting it on the wall. You won't have to worry about taping the wall off before painting or taking as much time being careful after it's nailed to the wall. Touch ups are a breeze this way...

Prep trim to fill and fill and smooth nail holes that should be counter set. Then paint trim, let dry and then paint walls and cut in to the trim. Save trim paint to touch up as needed.

Paint it after so that you can fill in the nail holes from mounting it.
