Because they are wusses. I was in labor for over 48 hours and pushed for over 6.. I did not scream once.
Same goes to when they are in labor.. "waaaa waaaa it hurts". Yeah, it hurts, but it is bareable. No need for an epidural either.. WOMAN UP women!

I don't believe I actually screamed. Did some REALLY loud groaning though. Unless you're choosing natural childbirth, the worst part is the contractions. They last for HOURS, getting progressively worse until you KNOW a body can not possibly survive such intense pain. Death has to be next. I begged God to strike my husband dead on the spot because all he did was wring his hands, and say breathe, breathe, while I was writhing in agony and ripping the pillow case to shreds with my teeth. I can't imagine not having some kind of painkiller before the actual birth. Epidurals rock!!!!
Hats off to you ladies that go natural all the way. You got way more nerve than I do.

Well obviously you can see from your multitude of answers that it hurts. It's kind of a given. Every person handles pain in a different way and for some people letting it out helps control the pain, for others it doesn't.
And to Jan...what an un-womanly thing to say. Do you know how dumb you sound in that comment? Just because a woman thinks labour is painful or may cry out during it does NOT mean she's a wuss in any way. I had a vacuum literally shoved in to my vagina and then had a 9 pound 9 ounch baby torn out of me. You want to tell me that I am a wuss because I cried out at the end? Chuck off Jan!!!

Some of the answers have a point, hell I had 4 - 9 pound boys out of my vagina. Some women scream because they are not used to the pain. The burning scares them. If you just keep thinking I want my baby in my arms, than you will just push and push instead of screaming.

I would say because of the pain, but usually women who scream are told to stop since it takes away energy from pushing & is just totally unnecessary. I didn't scream, yell or even get b-tchy with either of my labors, so I don't get it..

Personally, having had three children, it's simple. It hurts like hell! Think about what your body is actually doing to get that baby out. If I were to do it all over again, I would have gotten a epidoral with all three of them. It's very strange, but you forget that pain afterwards. Why else would we do it more than once?

Because it hurts, dear.
It's more painful than anything they've ever experienced before in their lives, they're trying to push a football sized thing out of where a tampon is normally a snug fit. Many women TEAR. Yup. Imagine flesh tearing front-and-back. Tearing. Still wondering why they scream?

from hearing other women in labour, they tend to scream at the man, and moan when the baby is coming out, because it is extremely painful i guess could be one explanation

because that's one way for some women 2 relieve the pressure of the pain when the are in labour because delivering a child is very painful even with pain relief
