I am sitting right now less than a mile from Spindletop. It is now within the City limits of Beaumont,TExas

Anthony Lucas felt there was oil on Spindletop HIll. On January 10, 1901 the Lucas Gusher blew in at Spindletop and the oil industry was born. There had been oil discoveries at Titusville, PA but in not large enough quantities to spark a major industry. Also large quantities of oil were in Siberia but they were too far inland to create an industry.

Spindletop being about 20 miles from the Gulf of Mexico was the birth of the oil industry.

Another major discovery, larger than the one in 1901 was found at Spindletop in 1925.
