I don't want to say dumb things like, "don't cry," and I don't need to advice on finding them counceling. I just want to help comfort them when they turn to me. I feel so awkward, but I really want to help my friend feel better. She was suppose to visit her grandfather because he was sick, but before she could he passed away. Today. Any suggestions would be welcome. Thanks

I think you should just be honest, if you start you might end up saying the right things..and i understand...it feels so awkward wanting to say something but thinking the same overused cliches just aren't sincere enough. Just make sure you say something so she knows that you want to help, because really, a true friend isn't always the person who knows what exactly to say- but the person who sincerely wishes she did and tries to. Many apologies for the loss of your friend's granpa!

Tell your friend you are there for her. Tell her she can call on you to cry, vent, express what she is feeling and thinking. Grief is such a personal experience and there is no right or wrong way as it is different for everyone.

Just be a friend by listening, hugging, making coffee, whatever she may need. And sometimes just being around, without trying to fix her, talk to her, etc can be the best remedy of all.

You just tell your friend that you are sorry that her grandfather passed away and if there is anything you can do to help her with that you will do it and you will be there for her.

Just let your friend know you will be there for whatever they need. Sometimes words like i'm sorry and they are better off now really dont help.
