Capitalism is the reason the US is a superpower. Capitalism, along with the intellectual property laws, are the reason every single person is on the internet and their computers right now. The countries that allow a free market are the ones that succeed and hold their strengths.
Consumer is just a word. Everyone consumes and everyone produces. We just don't do it at the same rates. Socialism would have you assume that we all produce what we consume to even things out and make it fair for everyone. Well human nature doesnt work that way. There will always be people that will try to mooch off the rest and others that want more power all to themselves. Capitalism is the best economic system we have, for a large population, that makes it most fair for those that do the work to gain more profit. This has to be combined with smart decisions and good choices as well. The reason it works particularly well in the US is that we also have specific human rights preserved and protected and we have a mindset within our population that feels the need and desire to be self reliant. Once we start handing over that reliance to the gvt and taking it away from ourselves we will be in trouble.

Of course not the media needs a subject to hype that was their choice. The alternatives are communism which is a big loser and socialism which drains a country of capitol so everyone is poor and miserable. So far the alternatives have NOT been helpful to the working class or the poor. At least with capitalism you got a choice, you can start a business of your own and succeed, you can work in a factory or an office building AND you can get help when you can't work.

Well the rich fat Libertarian elitists would tell you from behind their tax shelters that everyone is fine and dandy. But the real fact are the today in America 5% of the people control 60% of the wealth. That is what true Capitalism does, any person who has any background in economics will tell you that. But can one overlook the fact that poverty is a necessity in any economic system, it provides us with a cheap workforce. So Capitalism is definitely better for the country as a whole. However one must ask themselves is it better for the average American?

Capitalism is killing the whole world not just America. And because of capitalism almost the whole world is killing.
Capitalism was right 200years ago. Today it has grown into a cancer on a global scale.
Surely with the great minds across the world today we can come up with a better economic system.

good question. Has progress improved human life? and whose lives have been improved?
we are not in a natural human state, and our society breeds decadence, a lack of virtue.
societies are formed to ensure the sustainability of people from external agressions and foster the sustainability of humans, at least in theory. So why do people go starving? People didnt starve or fight for clean water before society and the development of capitalism within the past few hundred years.,
