both, to be a good guitarist u need to have a great sense of rhytmn, that is what gives the song about 80% of the sound, the other 20% or so comes from adding some picking bits hee and there to give the song more appeal, u will need to actually learn to read music for that.

my advice would be:
1. listen to z song that ur trying to play and try to work out whether there is a consistent strumming style used, write the style down as beats (i.e. 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 for example) and humming the beats while strumming your guitar, once you got the rhytmn down pat, all you need is to learn the chords.
good luck

Slow down on both hands, try to synchronized them. Slowly work building your speed and do plenty of stretches on your fingers and scales!!! Oh and learning to play music notes and such is essential but can also restrict your creativity. Learn by ear I'd say.

If you have a good ear I don't think you need to learn to read music. although Reading music is the most effective way to speed up your fingers, and have a complete music understanding.

One way you can speed up is doing scales, and practice solos from your favorites bands

get one of those finger excerciser things and just run your fingers up and down the fret board really fast and se if you can hit notes without buzzing or muting any of em accidentally. I think it is worth it to learn to read music.

4 fingers and they cover 4 frets. which frets? every chord is a scale withing it's self. try steady 1/8th notes, then 1/16 notes, then 1/32nd notes, then try triplets of each in scale patterns - scales are within the chord structures - play cordially. good luck...

PLay scales, scales and more scales faster and faster. Also jam with some friends and when you adlib, keep lifting the tempo. Even if you sound lousy and miss notes, push it and your speed will get better...
