My normally orderly classroom has gone to complete chaos this week. I am not a newbie to teaching and honestly have never had a class get this crazy at the end of the year. (only 10 more days...thank god) Any REALLY GOOD and CREATIVE suggestions are appreciated. I have tried all my normal tricks of the trade.

Ask for your kids to put on a presentation that teaches the K students all of the procedures and rules of first grade. Tell them you are inviting the K kids in (really do it). Have the kids get in groups to come up with as many rules / procedures that you have and make posters for them. Have the kids practice modeling them, so they will be ready to show the K kids. Meanwhile your chaotic kids will be practicing all of their best behavior.

I also teach 1st grade...and I feel your pain! I had a kid run out of the room today, down the hallway, out the front school doors, and dashed 2 blocks down the street before he was caught by the vice principal.

Play Bingo (sight word, addition, subtraction)
Study rocks and soil outside.
Watch educational shows.
Read a Junie B. Jones book to the class
Study and collect leaves outside
Put the class into 2 teams...teams compete by answering questions about math, science, etc....winning team gets prizes.
Sing lots of songs
Read a lot of poems together

The end of the year is always wild in my class. I think they are ALMOST as ready for summer as us.

Sounds like it's a good time for some outdoor school! This is a good time for taking them out for science and looking at new leaves, flowers, little bugs etc. It might also be a good time to have them do drawing with sidewalk chalk if your school will let you. Math can be brought in by counting flowers etc. Review the colors and so on (that can even be done by letting them see cars). PE with some games like over under or such and even music with circle dances (remember the hokey pokey?) if you have a boombox available.

A little each day can be a reward and learning experience.

When it gets nice out it is nice to get out!

ASk what movies they like then bring in that movie. Also have some healthy snacks for them to munch on. You can do this before nap time which would be good becuz some kids might falll asleep. Or after watching the movie they will be more calm so they can resume being normal.

Or, in class talk about summery things. This kids are probably so excited about doing those things, and they can't. If they talk about it, they let it go a little and will calm down.

Finally you can do some educational but summery activities to get them into line

Good luck with it!

Oh sister...I feel your pain! Try having 5th graders who are getting ready to go to middle school and their horomones are raging, and girls are being catty to one another, and the note passing is out of control...and then I was out today because my daughter was sick..and this was the first job for the sub EVER!! LOL!

My suggestion is to keep them busy! Even if it's strickly busy work! Idle minds as they say....

My other suggestion is have them do a play. We finished our social studies curriculum in record time so for the last few weeks (15 days to be exact) we are doing a play on the underground railroad. I gave them the script, kids are producing, directing, making the scenery, advertising around the school for the audience..etc....

Other than that..I'm outta ideas ;o)

I have teenagers(my sons) and they are as antsy as all get out. There are 2 at home, `14 and 17. I would like to find answers to your questions.

I am trying to focus on their good behavior times, but those are rare and far between. Sigh.

Tell them they will get special surprises if they listen. When they ask what the surprise is, say a party with good food and games. You could plan the party at the end of the year. Also, you could give them less work at some times to bribe them to calm down. Whenever your class is talking when you do not want them to, teach them to do these:
-You say-M-I-C-
They join in K-E-Y M-O-U-S-E
That should get their attention after you teach it to them
-You say-1,2 eyes on who?
They say-1,2 eyes on you.
That should also get their attention after you teach it to them.
-You say-Working Zone
They say-Let's get to work
That should also get them to work after you teach it to them.
Good luck!

ask them what they want to do and then compromise on a fun and educational activity or you could be punishing a lot of kids and send them to the principals office to scare the other kids or if there is the strap at your school then smack one of the kids in front of the whole class and that will scare them enough to behave

Maybe games like:
Hangman
7-up
Lock them all in a glass box and try to feed them to tigers (Not Really)
The guy above me is on to something with the movie idea.
