Are you all high schoolers who didn't take a college economics class? Not pumping gas for one day will do absolutely nothing at all.

The only way to drop gas prices is to cut consumption, thus lowering the demand.

I love how people listen to other people just because it's the popular thing at the moment..

I laugh at the people thinking they are going to make a big dent in the oil industry. Get those mean oil tycoons.

No you do not have proof, and no it did not drop 30 cents overnight.

In the first week of April 1997, the average price of a gallon of gasoline nationwide was $1.248. By the end of the month, the weekly average was $1.24. If there was a one-day drop of 30 cents a gallon, it doesn’t show up in the statistics compiled by the Department of Energy.

No, how do people not understand this?

You cannot cause any decrease in gas prices by not buying gas on one specific day. The losses on that day (may 15th) will have been re-gained whenever you buy gas the next time.

If you don't decrease the CONSUMPTION, then your plan is useless and dumb.

They will still be selling the same amount of gas no matter which day you buy it.

This is every bit as intelligent as the teacher's plan to fight Big Nasty Coporations the summer of 78 at Blackburn college (both my parents attended and remember this). A group of teachers convinced almost an entire dorm to shut off air conditioners and open refrigerator doors on one day, to get double use out of their electricity. Needless to say, they couldn't circumvent the laws of physics. Lot's of food went bad and the dorm temperature rose about 10 degrees as the refrigerators' coils overheated trying to cool an entire apartment building, and electricity bills went up. These kinds of antics are the result of people believing that something can be achieved without effort. The people that buy into this stuff are the same who will tell you that the 60's were Important and Meaningful, not just the result of thousands of spoiled suburban kids.

amen brother! nice to see someone with some sense...and for those doubters, i was there in '97 when prices did NOT drop by 30 cents in one day...funny how NOT ONE of these lemmings can produce so much as a receipt or a news clipping documenting their claim...by the way, the chain e-mail that people keep falling for USED to say that the legendary 1 day drop happened in '79...that was hogwash, as well...was buying gas back then, too...and there NEVER was a 1 day drop in gas prices...

I plan to not only fill the car, but the H-1, the Pickup and about 30 5 gallon Jerry cans. Do you know what the lines will be like on the 16th.

I agree: boycotting 'big oil' for one day won't even make a dent in its billion-dollar profits. In fact, even the most fervent "protesters" simply will fill up on May 14th if they know they'll need to drive on the 15th.
Perhaps a month-long boycott might make more of a difference, but the only thing that's really going to work is when Americans stop using so much gasoline.
"Big oil" is not any different than a sleazy drug dealer. "Big oil" knows we're 'hooked' and that there's no place we can go to feed our addiction other than to the gas pumps.
Thanks to 'big government's' lack of vision, there are no viable alternative fuels available, no American vehicle manufacturers really committed to producing fuel-efficient automobiles, and no breakthroughs on the horizon as far as mass transportation. We all simply keep driving our $65,000 gas-guzzling SUVs without any passengers, and without regard for the price we pay at the pump or the damage we do to the environment.
America's hubris, sloth and gluttony won't change unless - and until - our government take a proactive stance toward destroying the monopoly "big oil" has created for itself.
We waste precious natural resources, ignore the delicate ecological balance between man, plants and animals that allow us to survive on this planet, and go on squandering money and energy on huge cars we don't need instead of choosing compact two-passenger cars, mopeds, bicycles, or walking shoes.
But then - when has our government EVER done anything proactive? It only knows how to REact to crisis (and it doesn't do that very well, either).
How many truly believe that two "big oilmen' in the White House is just sheer coincidence? How many believe that the 'war' in Iraq has everything to do with stealing that nation's oil reserves and absolutely nothing to do with "bringing democracy" to that country???

I posted that as an asnwer once as a joke. If I need gas on the 15th, I'll go pump it. I figure those who aren't going to then will either fill up the day before or the day after.

Huh? What's happening? If every person in the country took part of this, it might have some temporary effect. Just a thought for you... no, most high schoolers haven't taken a college econ class. Alot of college students haven't even taken an econ class.

I agree with you. [I think?] I keep my tanks full as everyday the price is higher. One day won't do anything except give the cashiers a easy, long day.

Let them have their little fantasy. At least I won't have to wait at the pump that day.
