Active X in itself is not the issue.. what is at issue is what active x controls you allow a website to load on to your machine. Here is a good article to help you. I have my computer set to ask me if it should load the control from a website. That way I can decide to allow or not allow depending on what website I visit. They can be a real problem should someone decide to use one for bad purposes.

Additional to Tracy...
Buy Acronis TrueImage 10...
Use that to backup Windows to an image file and then if you ever get anything nasty, restore the image.
What I also do is set C: Windows XP at 20GB though could be smaller and then a D: partition for the rest of the space. Then I cut and paste (move) DESKTOP, My Documents and FAVORITES to D:\System Files - Do Not Delete! (hidden).
Now when I backup C:\ my saved stuff is retained on D:\.
Before I update programs, I restore to the last image first and then make a new backup once I've updated. I came up with this idea as was the only true way I could think of to be free of spyware. I do it once a month or so...
If you use sensible sites, Active x will be fine.
Go to crack sites and you'll get free viruses.
I'm buying all my software now...too risky and you should support the programmer. I buy my music too.

Yes if you set the security choices in Internet Explorer to ask before loading active-x controls, that way you know what's going on. Some web sites need it to display properly though.
I use Firefox, which doesn't use active-x and so far I've only had to use IE with Active-x for 2 sites. If you are looking at a banking site, then you can safely use the controls, if you are trying to get uncensored pictures of the latest heart throb then perhaps not

Been fine on my laptop for a year. Suppose it depends what you download to play using active x. You do have to take off the windows control stopping active x which suggests it could be dodgy but it is a microsoft program so long as you stick with decent files to play I think it would be OK

Yup. It's absolutely safe to install Active X, n' that's 'cause it's from the Microsoft Corp. The ones that created Internet Explorer n' Windows.

Active X is only used in Internet Explorer.
More and more software developers are using it to deploy their software, but where there is good, there is evil. Hackers, Virus makers and Malare developers also use it to screw your system and steal your private information, so looking at it on a wider spectrum, Active X is yet another rubbish invention by Microsoft.
