Well, that depends on your race and class.

Going with first aid is ALWAY important with every character you make.

If you're a druid, skinning is a good idea. If you're a hunter, mining is great. I think warlocks are safe to go with herbalism. Essentially, look at what your class needs in order to decide what will be the most helpful to you.

Note: If you're an Alliance shaman, gem crafting is a good place to start since there aren't many gem crafters yet.

If you are looking to make money, mining is a good choice.

Ok, to start with, enchanting is a really EXPENSIVE profession. It will be a LONG time before people start lining up and begging for your enchants.

It also is expensive since you have to disenchant magical items for materials instead of selling them.

There are a number of good options for enchanters let me lay them out.

Enchanting + Tailoring = the traditional combination. Tailoring doesn't require a gather skill, so it meshes well with enchanting. Many enchanters are cloth wearers, so that is even better. You can create greens from tailoring and disenchant for materials too. Of course, you lose out on tailing's income if you do that. The mateirals come from huminoids, so you get experience getting them, but the drop rate can be really low. Raw cloth sells for a TON on the auction house, so you lose out on that income if you use it to make stuff.

Enchanting + Mining = Mining is now the only gather profession absolutely required for THREE professions (blacksmith, engineer, and gem cutting) so these materials are always in demand. (And maybe you are better off selling them raw as opposed to refining them.) You won't get things to disenchant this way, and many mining places are crowded and dangerous, but it’s not a bad choice. You can boost your skill pretty fast by refining what you mine, but gem cutters want the materials raw. You have to buy occasional upgrades to this skill, and buy new refining possibilities, but they are relatively cheap.

Enchanting + Skinning = Until the coming of gem cutting this was THE gather to beat. It is only absolutely required by one profession, but its materials are necessary for about every other crafter. You won't be able to turn your scraps and low-level leathers into higher levels, but at least you get EXP while you gather it and it is a one time profession cost.

Enchanting + Herbalist = Not quite as popular, there aren't as many Alchemists as we really need; so its gather profession isn't as popular, but there won't be as much competition either. It works a lot like mining, but without the extra skill boost of refining.

Enchanting + Any crafter = Expensive, but possible I suppose. You'll have to buy ALL your materials from the Auction House, so this really isn't the best idea, but you can do it if you like.

The best way to boost enchanting is to keep using it. Enchant everything you sell to the auction house before you sell it. When you are in groups, let the group know you are willing to enchant for them. Advertise on the trade channels that you are selling or, better yet, giving away low level enchants for experience.

Never give away anything with truly expensive materials, and don't give away things that give weapon glow (those can sell for ridiculous amounts.)

Get a disenchant predictor for your UI; it will take some of the guess work about what to disenchant for what. It won’t tell you what you will get, just what you can, but that helps a lot.

Well, if you want money, i would go either skinning or mining. Skinning is WAY easier to lvl and you get some good cash for it in outlands. I just gave up skinning for JC and it makes me cry at night. lol. I would go skinning, enchanting is going to chew up ur gold flow, skinning is an easy way to get that cash back from the AH. Mining is also quite good, esp now, DONT smelt all your ores. In JC you need the ores to prospect (get the gems out of). So if you roll Miner, dont smelt all your goods.

Tailoring is a classic. You can make items, and then d/e them for mats. Other good choices are mining, herbing, or skinning, which you can sell on the ah.
