i have a very old picture and i scanned it and i was able to restore it and get a very clear black and white picture i was wondering if there was a way i could make the picture in color. is there a free software i could use? or any other thing like that

Mirrorcoin, you can try this program here:

The download is a 3-week trial, but all features are functional.
What you need to do, is to use the color palette on the right, pick the color according to categories, then use the brush tool to paint the chosen color on the photo(paint only dots will do; the more dots on a same color area would be better). Then after all areas of the photo has been dotted, click on the "Colorize" button and see the magic! Save the image as a jpeg or other formats. It takes some practice and patience. Hope this helps.

If you have your picture scanned, make a copy and start playing in your drawing program.
Many have a clone-pencil, or copy-brush.
Use a scanned colour photo in the colour-range you want your to be and copy the colours into the black and white.

I do not think there is software that can do it by itself, because the difference in shades of gray do not indicate which colour was used.
(Making b/w out of colour is easy.)
